About the Author

Mary P. McGowan, M.D., is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the division of cardiology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. She is also the author of Heart Fitness for Life.

Jo McGowan-Chopra is a freelance writer based in Dehra Doon, India. Her articles have appeared in Newsweek and Span, as well as all the major daily newspapers in India. She is also a regular columnist for Commonwealth and is the coauthor of Heart Fitness for Life.

Readable and motivating

As with all her writings, the author is motivating and easy to read. She is extremely knowledgable from many years of practice, and her co-author sister is a professional writer. This is all you will ever need to read about high blood pressure. Chances are that you will be motivated to make changes and that you will live a healthier, longer life. Personally, I have lost 30 pounds and have become more fit which has allowed me to cut back on my blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol medications.

A book about Glaziers? Yes.

Reading this book gave me the same happy feeling I used to get when Mr. Rogers took me around the neighborhood to visit the postman and plumber. Being so caught up in my own work, I seldom take note of what everyone else in the world is up to.

In the opening pages, Little writes this: "Most people don't think about the work that goes into windows -- they look through them, not at them -- but that's part of the point. A good glazier doesn't leave any evidence of his or her work. All the time and effort that went into it, all the elbow grease and careful accuracy, become as invisible as the glass."

The author then goes on to show us the invisible, with such genuine fascination that I found myself right there with her, staring up in bewilderment at those people dangling from the sides of buildings.

For many readers this book will serve as a useful guide to the trade. For others, like me, it will be a reminder to open our eyes a little wider on the world.

Just Right for Someone Checking Out This Career

This little ebook is perfect for checking out my interest in possibly going into a new career. There's some history, and some practical information. Links to other sites to find out about qualifications and potential pay scales. I especially appreciated the personal stories told by different people that work in the glass trade. It showed me that there are different routes to take, even within working with glass, like the artisan work and restoring stain glass windows. The book was the right size to get a good idea what was involved in getting into this career without getting bogged down in too much detail.

Exactly what it needs to be

Another very useful book from this author. Very easy to read and informative. The introduction and background information is quite interesting, entertaining. And the interviews, especially, give a great idea of the possibilities of the job. I particularly enjoyed reading that of the one woman glazier, as it appears women are fairly uncommon in this field. All, very well done.

Great novel, from the beginning till the end

Great novel, from the beginning till the end. Full of action and drama, if you loved the road from Cormac Mcarthy, if you like the survival video games and the sci fi movies all is mixed in this novel. If you buy it you don't regret it at all.

About the Author
Robert N. Gunn has worked at TWI since 1987, when he was appointed to the Materials Department as Research Engineer: stainless steels and corrosion in the Materials Department. He is currently Manager of the Corrosion and Analytical Chemistry section at TWI - Plant Integrity Ltd. Robert Gunn has produced over 20 published technical papers and has undertaken a great deal of research in the specialised area of duplex stainless steels.

If I learned something new, I know you will too.

I cherish getting to read stuff like this about my dad. We all rarely know all there is to know about what rattles around in our parent's minds. Reading this let me learn a few new things about how he saw the world. Larry asked some amazing questions that had never been put to dad. Thank you, Larry.

One of the most readable books of contemporary philosophy I've ever read.

Conversations with Carlin is thoroughly enjoyable. I just finished it, and I LOVED IT. I really didn't want to stop reading. It is a fairly short book (approximately equivalent to 89 pages, or so Amazon says). Although I always had positive thoughts about George Carlin -- I knew he was smart and funny and unique -- I wasn't a big follower of his act/shows/books. I never realized he was such a thinker. I honestly enjoyed reading his thoughts and I loved the questions the interviewer asked to bring those thoughts out.

I particularly loved the "argument against parental supervision," the way Carlin almost wasn't born (no spoilers here), reading about how Carlin came up with ideas, his thoughts on politics and education, and especially his thoughts on George Bush. Great stuff!

Conversations with Carlin was one of the most readable books of contemporary philosophy I've ever read.

(Sidenote: I felt that Getlen had the right amount of journalistic professionalism to keep himself out of it - really focusing on Carlin the entire time. That really helped me lose myself in the what Carlin was saying, and not have to feel like I was experiencing him through someone else's lens. I mean, I *was* experiencing him through Getlen's lens, but at least the lens was invisible, if you know what I mean.)

Insightful interview with a much-missed comedy great

As a longtime Carlin fan, I was so thrilled to be able to spend some time with the non-performing side of him. You learn his routines and you cherish his deftly honed turns of phrase, so it's fascinating to hear him (er, read - but you can also hear his voice in your head, at least I could) talking in normal conversational style about such a wide range of subjects. I've read various magazine interviews with him over the years, but none, obviously, was able to go to this length. And Carlin deserves this length. Larry Getlen obviously developed a great rapport with his subject, delving into topics from Carlin's formative childhood to really lofty philosophical questions, and Carlin, bless him, was game for discussing all of them. This is such a gift for anyone who loves Carlin and, like me, feels like the world became a less interesting place the day he died. Will make my Christmas shopping easy, for at least a couple of likeminded friends and family members.

About the Author

Ronald W. Rebore, Ph.D. is a tenured professor in the Department of Education at Saint Louis University, where he researches and teaches in the graduate educational leadership program. Before going to the University, he was a high school English and Social Science Teacher and a high school Guidance Counselor. Further, for a total of twenty-two years, he served as an Assistant Superintendent for business and finance in the Lindbergh School District and Superintendent of Schools for the Valley Park and Special School Districts. Most recently, he served as the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Graduate School at Saint Louis University. Dr. Rebore’s research and publications focus on the human dimensions of educational leadership, which include ethics, human resources administration, and human relations. He has authored twelve books, and is currently working on the 10th revision of his internationally acclaimed book: Human Resources Administration in Education, A Management Approach. The HR book and his book on human relations have been translated into Chinese and are used to teach future educational leaders in China. The First Edition of the ethics book has been translated into Korean.

Another missed opportunity

The Ethics of Educational Leadership is written in classic textbook form. It is not a practitioners book which would be useful to a working professional. As such, Rebore appears to have elevated the price to take advantage of the captive student market. At the time of this review, the book is well over four times the cost of similar books on ethics. Not exactly ethical behavior for a so-called ethicist. Evidently, ethics are profit-gererating devices for Rebore.

The book is written exclusively for public K12 education in the United States alone. It does not apply to private, post-secondary, or international contexts. As such, Rebore only provides a very narrowly defined view of education that misleads the reader more than it is helpful. While not blatantly so, Rebore's political biases are interwoven throughout the text and presented as fact, rather than personal opinion. A broader view of education to include non-public and international systems would help strengthen the book beyond the myopic focus it currently hold. The US doesn't have a monopoly on ethics, but you would never know that by reading this text

The book is very short on citations, links to empirical studies, or scholarly writing. On average, each chapter provides perhaps ten external references. The most grievous are the assessments, which provide no evidence of internal or external validity whatsoever. I guess making stuff up counts as scholarship at the Saint Louis University?

Finally, the reader must suffer through a bone-dry writing style which has been stretched well beyond it's breaking point. Good writing is concise and precise. This book is neither.

For professionals looking for a great book on ethics and educational leadership, this book is not for you. For college teachers looking for a textbook to use as a student-centered learning resource, this book is not for you. For college teachers who are looking for a book that provides a teacher-centric curriculum, this book might be for you. For students, you don't have a choice so best of luck on finding a used version, this isn't a book you will want to keep as part of your permanent collection so consider renting or other low-cost option.

Valuable for specific educational courses

This book was required for a course I was taking in Leadership Principles and ethics. After the course I saw no reason to keep the book. It was not the primary book for the course however it was of value and I did cite the content quite a bit for that specific course. The one thing I got out of this book that will stick with me is that ethics is all about about human conduct, what is and what is not acceptable. It is not about truth, it is about cultural norms and therefore subject to change at the whims of culture. Sometimes I will rent a book and decide I want to keep it because it has information that I find quite valuable and believe I will need it in the future. This is not one of those books. I recommend you rent this book if you are taking a course that requires it.

Very Provocative and Inspiring

Bill's book is not only chuck full of solid data that supports his thoughts on men, women and sexuality, but it is beautiful to look at and peruse through. As a businesswoman myself, Bill's explanation of the sexual dynamic in business circles was profound and even funny at times. I have referred to it with my Astrology clients who have a need to mix more pleasure with their business!

This book is a MUST READ for both Men and Women. Read it to each other or by yourself. Certainly one of the most honest books I have read. Gives both the male and female view of human sexuality, peppered with lots of humor and ability to grab the readers attention from page 1. Makes a great gift!!

Adam Brown’s civilian and military life has been recounted to me by his family, friends, and teammates—all eyewitnesses to each event portrayed in this book, including what Adam told them directly about his history and spiritual testimony. I also used official documents, statements, military records and reports, criminal records, family archives, letters, e-mails, and journal and diary entries. Some dates, locations, times, distances, and names (including those of some civilians) have been changed; faces in photographs obscured; and military tactics, techniques, and procedures altered in order to maintain operational security for the safety of the U.S. Navy SEALs
and those who work alongside them.

All information about the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, the SEALs, and individuals (including the use of real names) has already been published widely by the media and is deemed common knowledge. Nearly a dozen active-duty SEAL operators—including those in leadership roles—have unofficially, but no less meticulously, reviewed this manuscript for factuality and to point out any issues that might endanger lives in future operations. I have removed or rewritten sections to their approval, and in the few cases of discrepancy among the operators, I went with
the majority. Any vagueness in the manuscript is intentional, to protect these men and their allies.

A TRUE AMERICAN HERO!

I was somewhat conflicted when I read the story of this hero. Having read many of the books published about Navy SEALs, one thing stands out, they all have an extreme focus on the end goal and make choices that move them closer to that goal. Adam Brown made some bad choices that had to be overcome. While any journey to wear a SEAL Trident takes a monumental effort, Adams journey is even more incredible with all the stumbling blocks he encountered.

Fearless is the obvious title for this book. Adam Brown became fearless by his deep belief in God, his wife, his family, and his team. You have to respect a person that would rather die than let down his team. That dedication shows when on the road to Kandahar their Humvee hit another vehicle and flipped multiple times. Adam severed the fingers of his right hand and they were hanging on with skin and tendons, but he completely disregarded that injury and went to work saving his teammate that had his leg crushed in the accident. Only when the Corpsman had his friend stabilized did he allow someone to tend to his injuries.

This book pays tribute to this hero. The author spoke with his childhood friends and family and in the first 80 pages outlined the story of a fun-loving kid. He was a kid who liked to push himself and loved dangerous feats, like jumping off of bridges into the river. He excelled at everything he attempted, and was on the path to do anything he wanted, when he made some bad choices and started using drugs. I have seen first-hand the damage that drugs like crack can do, so this story is even more amazing that he reached the top tier of the Navy SEALs while having to overcome the constant call of his crack addiction. While I did not like the person he was during his dark time with drugs, I did find myself pulling for him to succeed.

SEAL Team Six is the "best of the best" and a place where you have to be in the top 1% of a group that is already in the top 1% of the planet. You have to perform at incredibly high levels that most people, with fully functioning bodies and minds cannot achieve. Adam severed the fingers of his right hand, his shooting hand. He was injured in a training accident and lost sight in his right eye, his dominant shooting eye. He caved in his shinbone, had back problems, arthritis, walked around in constant pain all while fighting the urge to smoke crack, yet he still managed to overcome these issues, any one of which would disqualify a normal man, yet he still forged on.

Adam went to Sniper school, a school with a very high attrition rate, because only the best graduate from this incredibly tough school. Now many SEALs complete Sniper school, but Adam had to relearn how to shoot using his left hand and his left eye. That is unheard of.

All throughout this book you will be touched by Adam's generosity and his constant devotion to others. In Afghanistan he would never leave any checkpoint or observation post without helping fill sandbags or in some way fortifying the outpost. He would regularly give away his MREs to the local children and even organized his church to send kids sneakers when he realized that the local Afghan children had to wear open sandals during the harsh mountain winters. He was a man that always made the world a better place for others.

By the time I was halfway through this book I was increasingly saddened because I felt it unfair that a hero like Adam was going to die. But true to his character his life ended in a detailed battle where he never once stopped to think about himself, he just remained fearless while trying to protect and defend others.

His loyalty to his team was shown in their loyalty to him. When he was shot multiple times and badly wounded his teammates made heroic efforts to save him and get him to a hospital. Sadly, as we all know, he did not make it.

Adam touched a lot of people during his short life. He made a difference to many people. If a man is judged by the positive difference he makes in the lives of others, then Adam Brown truly is a hero.

The Navy SEALS is one of the most elite military teams in the world. It's the envy of most boys, and have been the foundation of many fictional characters in novels. But there's no fiction in this book.

Christian, Warrior, Navy SEAL, and American HERO, Chief Adam Brown, in his final act of bravery, died trying to engage enemy fire away from his team who were pinned down and under heavy gunfire. In doing this, he saved the lives of his unit but paid the ultimate price. Chief Brown's team was able to eliminate all the combatants who were shooting at them.

The author introduces the reader to Adam prior to joining the military and describes how he was always an adventurous individual and daredevil - from jumping off bridges into lakes to jumping off roofs into trees, Adam was 'Fearless'.

Several months after Adam was killed serving his country, most of his unit also died when their Chinook was shot down in August 2011, in Afghanistan.

I commend the author on this well written book, and have prayed for Adam's wife, children and family. Blessings to all the men and women in uniform.

This Book Will Rock Your World

Adam Brown's life ended in an isolated military clinic in the mountains of Afghanistan, his body riddled with AK-47 bullet holes from Taliban militia. However, Adam Brown's legacy lives on, described in his biography by author Eric Blehm. The book, Fearless, released today (May 22) is a moving account of the struggles, redemption, and sacrifice of Adam Brown.

Adam Brown was a Navy SEAL operator serving in Afghanistan with the elite DEVGRU team, otherwise known as SEAL Team Six - the group that took out Osama bin Laden. Brown's journey to the top tier of military excellence is the story of a small-town American boy with a penchant for recklessness, an addiction to hard drugs, and a complete lack of fear.

Brown's life was changed when he met Jesus in a grimy Arkansas jail cell. His problems didn't disappear. But his sinful heart was changed, and his life would take a totally different direction.

Fearless chronicles the life of Adam Brown -- from humble birth to tragic death. The book tells the story of his wife's courage and persistant love. The book communicates the heroism of SEAL Team Six. The book conveys the pathos of war. Most importantly, Fearless shows how the love of Jesus can change a sinner's heart.

- Eric Blehm writes a good biography. He may lack the polish of an Erik Larson (Garden of the Beasts), but his style is simple and compelling. The power of his writing is its research and accuracy. Blehm set out to write a straightforward biography, not a sensational bestseller.
- Adam Brown's life is an inspiration. Ever since I was a kid, I cherished dreams of joining the Marines or Navy SEALs, just to prove to myself that I was powerful and capable. I'm probably not going to be heading into BUDS training, but I appreciated reading about someone who did. Adam Brown was the best of the best (SEAL) of the best (DEVGRU), working against unbelievable opposition and overcoming incredible obstacles to get there.
Brown wasn't just a meathead and military machine. He was a compassionate humanitarian, a devoted husband and father, and a disciple of Jesus. I appreciated his acts of kindness toward the Afghan children, and his brave witnessing to hardened SEALs.
- I'm thankful for our military. While I am not a fan of the ra-ra-beat-em-up-kill-em-all-send-em-to-hell approach to our nation's defense, I do appreciate those who serve in the armed forces. I am especially thankful for those, like Adam Brown, who bring compassion and maturity to their task.
- Most importantly, I marvel at the grace of God. Eric Brown's life, just as it is with anyone who has been redeemed, is a testament to God's infinite love and kindness. I was encouraged to be a channel of this kindness to others, and a faithful witness of his gospel. There are Eric Browns all around us. They need Jesus, not our judgment. They need grace.

I encourage you to read Fearless for its dazzling display of God's grace, and its compelling story of sacrifice and courage.
