For Short Story Lovers

I was enchanted with Roald Dahl's writing as a child ever since I read CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY and JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH. I was pleasantly surprised to stumble across this book while browsing through the shelves of my university's library. After reading TASTE and then LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER, I found it difficult to put the book down. I find Dahl's style of writing and his keen attention to detail an absolute delight. Every story is a treat and I relish the moments that I have a bit of time to read a story or two. As a busy student, I don't have much time for recreational reading, and that's why short stories are a favorite. I enjoyed the book so much that I decided to purchase a personal copy from Amazon because this is a book I would like to read more than once. I had just been reading some of Shirley Jackson's short stories and was delighted to find another author who is consumately skilled in the genre. For those of you who like unusual stories with a twist, this book is for you.

"Jubilee," for example, concerns two neighbor girls home from Stanford for the summer. Parker, the oldest, is the daughter of a ranch owner, while scholarship student Andrea's father is a worker on the ranch. Andrea has a chip on her shoulder about Parker's wealth that spills over in ugly, unexpected ways. In the title story, teenage Frances rides her father's bus to the downtown fiesta but gets in over her head when she flirts with a "painter." Each of the stories is set in a rural New Mexico—a setting not often represented in fiction. Most feature characters with unrelenting hubris being forced to examine their often prejudiced attitudes toward others. The role of religion is examined in three different stories. In "The Five Wounds," Amadeo is hoping to play the role of Jesus in this year's Good Friday celebration when his foul-mouthed, pregnant teenage daughter arrives on his doorstep. In "Family Reunion," Claire goes on vacation with her Mormon neighbors, but Mormonism isn't what she thought it might be. Finally, in "Ordinary Sins," a woman works at a rectory and gets drawn into a conflict between the beloved older priest and the strict newcomer. This work offers dark and often hopeless but thoughtful portrayals of working class New Mexicans from different perspectives. Seriously!

I have read many books from this author and this is the first and only one I have really and truly hated. It took all I had to finish this (and it's a short read)! In the beginning of the book, the heroine was very mature and realistic in her assessment of the car accident and event afterward. Beyond that, it went downhill. The heroine was practically raped from my point view. I could care less about the color of the "hero" or how much money he has, no woman regardless of age or color should be approached or treated in such a fashion.

If this is your first book by this author, please don't base your final opinion of her writing on this book. The Alpha Billionaire's Bride may change your opinion.

Too short of a story

I like reading about Keela and Simon but it was too short. She made him worked for the honor to be with her. I was glad to see she was a strong black woman but Simon wore her down in the end. Ms. Caldwell could have told more of the story about Simon and Keela individual life's that lead up to the accident. I thought the epilogue was cute. It did give the summary of what happened with their future.

Great evangelical message with super content!

This small book of 9 chapters reads like 9 sermons, all filled with Biblical references and examples from Moody's own life.

It details all the reasons to find God and is particularly convincing in layman's terms. I'd love to see how a non-believer would respond to these messages.

In particular, I loved the example of the man who chose to commit his life to Jesus, even though the "revelation" he felt was minimal. In his mind, he believed in the Gospel and wanted to know God. At the moment of saying yes, the revelation struck him. Great to read as in this modern world, so often we emphasise the "feeling" aspect of believing before we accept Jesus. Sometimes God works through the head too.

There's a super chapter on Repentance which I particularly liked.

This 127-page book from DL Moody is a delight to read. I read it within about two weeks, primarily as devotional in the morning and again, at night, before retiring.

In this 9-chapter volume, Moody addresses key topics in the Christian's way of life:
1) "Love that passeth knowledge" (Chapter i: pp. 7-22);
2) The gateway into the Kingdom (Chapter ii: pp. 22-40);
3) The two classes [i.e., the publican and the Pharisee] (Chapter iii: pp. 41-52);
4) Words of counsel (Chapter iv: pp. 53-62);
5) A divine Saviour (Chapter v: pp. 63-70);
6) Repentance and restitution (Chapter vi: pp. 71-83);
7) Assurance of salvation (Chapter vii: pp. 84-100);
8) Christ all and in all (Chapter viii: pp. 101-113);
9) Backsliding (Chapter ix: pp. 114-127);

The appeal of Moody's writing is that 1) Moody seems to write as he speaks, with passion and fervor for the lost, 2) his writing is interspersed with both a) abundant quotes from the Scriptures, and b) anecdotes of his personal life. For instance, in chapter iv, Moody writes, "I remember one night when the Bible was the driest and darkest book in the university to me. The next day, it became entirely different. I thought I had the key to it. I had been born of the Spirit..." (pp. 62; 2nd paragraph).

There are many more things I could say about this book from Moody; but the best way to learn about them is to read the book by, and for, yourself. Moody's volume may be an old book, published more than 125 years ago (in 1884), but it still has the timeless freshness of universal messages for this and the next generation(s).

Nice pictures, but little content

Make no mistake, the graphics of these notecards are super. The cards are organized very well and many anatomical landmarks are pinpointed.

But besides the occasional info about clinically relavent aspects of a particular body part, there are no descriptions about the orgins, innervations, insertions of muscles or any description about arteries or organs. There is a lot of empty space on the back of these cards so that you could take notes for yourself...but that is something that you can judge for yourself if you want to do, since that does take a lot of time.

They are great for you to test your ability to identify body parts, but if you don't know anything else about what the functions of the parts, these cards will not help very much.

Anatomy review cards helpful

As someone taking gross anatomy after being out of school for a while, I found these cards helpful for reviewing structures in their anatomical position. Each card has an illustration with 10-20 items identified on the front by number. On the back is the answer key. The beautiful illustrations are accurate and detailed, but in a more modern style than Netter. The detail was right for a graduate level anatomy course. As another reviewer commented, there are no proximal or distal muscle insertions, so if that is what you want than there are other card sets available for that purpose. I used these to review before exams by writing out my answers to ensure I had properly identifed each structure and could spell it correctly.

Could (should) have been better

We are using the Gray's Anatomy textbook for class, and so far I've enjoyed reading and studying from it, so I had high expectations when I explored the flashcards. I was disappointed for 2 main reasons:
1. Cards were not punched and a ring was not included for easily taking a small section of cards for portable studying.
2. The graphics were pulled straight from the textbook and downsized. In some pictures, the structures became so small that it is worhtless to try and label the structures in the picture. I was confused after looking at a flashcard picture with a pointer seemingly point at nothing, but after referring to the textbook with the larger picture I could see the small structure.

A pivotal deck for those who love animals.

I have so enjoyed this deck over the years. When I first recieved it, following the easy directions for use, I was able to determine my entire totom (all the animals that influence me). I found it to be amazingly accurate. The system allows the user to understand the symbolic meaning of the animals which appear to us, in dreams, in person, or I even count the ones on TV. Thier messages are always timely and useful. The cards are lovely, the book is complete, easy to use, with just wonderful stories that make it very easy to remember and use the system quickly. I love it. Thanks to the creators.

Medicine Cards: Discovery of Power through the Ways of Anima

I love this set, I kept my cards a secret to myself for the first few weeks I had them, but the identification of the reading and the situtaion I was questioning was eerie - so I asked various people who visited if they would not mind having a "Go" with the cards, well now my friends, family and acquaintences beleive I am a Shaman Sacred Card reader, this may be so but I believe it is the book and card set that are the true hero, as long as the person giving the reading has respect for the essense of the set the truth will Out. A teriffic gift to give someone interested in the subject of Native American Wisdom, it is so much fun to see a friends face change into the "Oh my god how did you know that" look. All readings are positive (I don't mean polite I mean give positive guidance for good news or bad) but one would have to be dim not to understand the significance of every card reading. If I can make sense of the set anybody can - The cards are Beautiful and the book print size is big enough for my bad eyesight, for late night reading with a bedside lamp.

Powerful, Beautiful Cards and Book

All of my friends who own this deck agree that the Medicine Cards are powerful and accurate. The stories are beautiful tales -- not overly descriptive and bogged down with tedious facts like a text book. They're spiritual stories that open up the reader to the universe and everything in God's creation through animals.

Native Americans found their source and power through their deep connection with the land and animals of this continent; and Jamie Sams and David Carson have done an excellent job of sharing some of these stories with us.

For those who are "open" spiritually, you should find the readings very accurate. Whether you're a devoutly spiritual Christian, a Buddhist, or simply a spiritual being -- these cards can teach you about the world of the original North Americans.

Wonderful for a small group Bible study!

I went through this Bible study with a small group of ladies this summer. Each week left us feeling so challenged in the areas we need to grow and helped us see what it looks like to truly "put on" Christ (His compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness & love) in our daily lives, thoughts, decisions, attitudes, and behaviors. Each week of the study is divided into 5 days, and each day's study is thorough without feeling overwhelming to complete.

This study is extremely practical, and I really saw the author's love for and knowledge of the Word of God. She has a clear and personable style of writing. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a Bible study to go through on your own or with a small group. Can't wait for the next one!

Challenging and Inspiring

I participated in this study with a group of ladies from my church. Though I had to miss a couple of the studies due to my schedule, the ones I did the study guide for were incredible. Carrie Rogers did a superb job bringing the Colossians 3:12-14 passage to life. "Therefore as God's chosen people holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves..." This resonates in my mind daily. I think of the charge that we have been given to wear compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience and I know in and of myself, it's impossible ... But, with Jesus, all things are possible. Thanks for a great study, Carrie. It was both challenging and inspiring. I think it's the perfect study for a group of women who want to deepen their faith and grown in love with Jesus.

Get ready for a closet makeover!

Carrie Rogers lays out in understandable terms what it means to put on the different attributes of Christ. Over the six week study I found some areas that I felt that I had down pat, but others that I was in desperate need of understanding in a more real way. Now that the study is finished, I find myself drifting back to the study for reminders from time to time, using phrases from the book in my every day thought life, and I have even realized that those areas that I had down pat have even benefited from the study (just goes to show He is never done working on us is He?!). "The Wardrobe of Christ" is a great study for every woman (just starting her walk or a seasoned veteran), for an individual, or for a group.
