The Mythical #8

Yes, this is the infamous Speer #8!
Yes, it's another gun myth. After reloading and experimenting for a little more than 20 years, I discovered most of the whispered tales of gore, dismemberment, and nuclear explosions at the range were complete nonsense that defy the laws of physics (SEE has always been one of my favorites), I decided to purchase #8 1st printing. According to legend, it published dangerous loads that produced pressures well beyond what any gun could safely handle that were sure to rip out your soul and remove fingers every time you pulled the trigger.
In reality I discovered their loads to be rather mellow and quite conservative compared to manufacturer's up-to-date published data. Or, at least with the calibers I load they seem mellow. I checked online for a couple dozen calibers I don't load and also compared to modern data from manufacturers, the #8 loads were kind of wimpy. So, if there is a problem with any of these #8 loadings, my guess would be a possibility of squibs.
I call this one busted.
While I only bought this manual out of curiosity, the loads published in it match loads I've used on the common rifle and pistol loads. Since I still have all my fingers and both eyeballs, and no exploded guns, I'll take a leap and say these loads should be fine in any modern firearm chambered for the round you're loading.

This is a classic

Speer #8 is often quoted and misunderstood. This is probably the hottest data out there and should NOT be used by beginners. Many of the listed loads are known to be over pressure limits considered safe today, and be used with extreme caution. This book should be used as a historical reference only. Compare these loads to those in Speer #7 and #9 or #10 and you will see what I mean.
However keep in mind that pressure testing methods, technology and standards have changed since this was published and this data was used for many years without blowing up the firearms in use at the time. Common sense was also more prevalent back in those days.
