Better Basquiat catalogs available

I own over 40 Basquiat catalogs and recently attended the current show a LA MOCA. This catalog is merely mediocre. For starters, many of the pictures of the works do not adequately render the colors with the appropriate intensity. As an example, the pink in "Arroz con Pollo" is a shown with a darker, reddish tint to it whereas in the actual painting the pink is very vivid, almost neon bright. Most of the photos are ones that have been previously published in numerous other books and catalogs. The 4 essays from Marc Meyer, Franklin Sirmans, Fred Hoffman, and Kellie Jones are good but not great. Overall, it's a competent catalog. Not bad but certainly not great.

If you can only afford (or have room for) just one Basquiat catalog you're MUCH better off getting the book produced by the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1999. It features more works, better reproductions and essays Shafrazi, Glenn O'Brien, Peter Brant, Keith Haring, and Henry Geldzahler (to name a few) Yes, it costs more than this catalog but it's well worth it.

An Unpardonable, Amatuerish Slop-Bucket

I invite all professional photographers to comment on the level of "expertise" of the repros issued in this book. Several of the photos are out of focus--as in JMB's "Undiscovered Genius.." There is never any excuse, no matter how wide or tall the painting (some are 10 or more feet), for any work to be out-of focus. Other paintings have their original color so distorted or leeched that these repros are criminally inept.

This book should be re-called and the photos re-done. It's that bad. The Marshall book, which another reviewer praises, is vastly superior to this book, with the exception of one painting "Notary," which is better repro'd in this book. A few essays and several new works make the book acceptable, barely, for a collector, but even the art-auction catalogues issued by Sotheby's, Christies, Phillips, etc. have superior reproductions of JMB's work. This edition is truly a mockery of a professional art book. I suggest getting the Marshall book, or nearly any of the other books on JMB, esp. those from Germany or France, some of which appear on Ebay as well.

Jean-Michel Basquiat and the Rise of Multiculturalism

After spending an afternoon strolling the huge exhibition of the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat currently at MOCA in Los Angeles, the visual indulgence becomes repetitive and exhausting. Yes, the works are curated well, the museum spaces the installation artistically, and the access to the spectrum of Basquiat's output (including collaborative works with Andy Warhol and Francesco Clemente) is thorough. But it is a bit of visual overkill to monopolize a museum with works that are so similar that the original graffiti punch that initiated the brief career of this artist is lost.

This highly professional catalogue (monograph) that accompanies the exhibition is a book that should be read BEFORE visiting the museum. The writing is excellent, much attention is paid to the time into which Basquiat emerged, the sociological importance of placing a graffiti artist's works in private galleries and in museums, and indeed the visual manifestation of the Hip Hop movement that Basquiat's works on paper and canvas represent prepares us for a show that subsequently becomes far more important. Quite a change from the usual 'catalogue as souvenir' concept so traditional in museums and galleries. This book stands alone as an art work: the reproductions are generous and well color-keyed, the essays are first rate, and the documentation of the works by Basquiat is in essence a Catalogue raisonné.

An Informative and Invaluable Management Tool for Any Organization

Sally Bibb's "Strengths-Based Recruitment & Development" is the most comprehensive, practical and beautifully written guide to sound recruiting and hiring practices I've ever read. As a small business owner in a period of transition and reorganization, Bibb's case studies and cogent analysis have provided my team with sound advice and broad perspectives, enabling us to move forward with a business model that is yielding positive -- and cost-saving-- results.

This book takes a look at a different kind of recruitment, hiring employees on what they are good at and like doing instead of what they can do and have done in the past: strengths-based recruitment (SBR) in other words. It can be a bit of a specialist read if you are not immersed in the world of human resources, yet it was quite a fascinating one. If only more companies would use this method. Of course, employees need to be able to have some core competencies, yet SBR does appear very attractive.

According to the author, companies that have introduced SBR have reported increases in productivity and customer satisfaction, creating more engaged workers who have reduced sickness levels too. There must be a correlation there!

Within this book the author takes a hard look at SBR, mi xing theory, case studies and practitioner interviews together and providing a fine overview on the subject that can be used as an implementation guide if required. For this reviewer, the mass of various interviews really brought the subject to light. Accepting that, of course, you would not be getting dissenting voices slating the concept of SBR, it still was capable of forming a compelling argument and it really was compelling reading. This helped transform it from being just a book for the HR-initiated and made it an ever greater read for a curious generalist. One can imagine that, in the right hands, this book could be a really great resource.

A short but sweet review about a great book that should be required reading for many who have yet to jump aboard the SBR-train!

Bill Risebero is an architect and town planner who since 1988 has taught architecture, design and urban regeneration at a number of British and American universities. He has also written two other books on architecture: Modern Architecture and Design, and Fantastic Form.

Comparison of Three Popular Architectural Histories

As an architectural novice who recently decided to learn more about it, I checked three books out of the library: The Story of Western Architecture, by Risebero; Western Architecture, by Sutton, and The Story of Architecture, by Glancey. This is a brief comparison of the three.

Risebero: This is an impressive book with many detailed line drawings but no photographs. The line drawings obviously lack the details and total impact of photos but they also allow the author to emphasize and isolate features of interest; photos can frequently confuse the eye with an excess of detail. Also includes sketches that illustrate building principles, e.g., what "pendentives" are, ways to intersect arches, etc. Risebero provides socio-cultural material that attempts to explain the reasons behind historical trends, movements, etc. I suspect this material is controversial among architectural historians, as such attempts usually are, but I lack the background to judge whether it exhibits strong biases, political agendas, etc.

Sutton: An attractive book with lots of coverage (I think more comprehensive than Risebero) and photos. The photos are black & white and unfortunately small due to the relatively small format of the (paperback edition) book. The text has a somewhat academic tone and concentrates on the buildings rather than the social theories expounded in Risebero's book.

Glancey: A large-format book with beautiful color photographs. The only book of the three to include non-Western architecture, such as Africa, Asia, etc. The text is large-font and more simplistic in tone and content than the above two.

Conclusions: Sutton was somewhat dry, lacking the feeling of continuity created by a narrative line. In contrast, Risebero's social commentary made for a better "story" (hence the title, I guess), but I did have the sense of social ideas being imposed upon me without having the background to evaluate them. Glancey's book was quite short and simple - perhaps almost more of a young-adult sort of book. If I were to pick a winner, it would be Risebero, for excellent line drawings and a storytelling feel that kept my interest. The only real lack was some nice big color photos (a la Glancey), but you can't have everything.

Burdensome and annoying

This book is taxing. While the book is generally interesting and concise it is overwhelmed by Risebero's political views which he seems to be able to interject at every possible moment. Risebero is a communist through and through, and the never-ending praise of Marx as "great" and the incessent criticism of capitalism is too much to take. From day one in the history of Western architectural history Risebero somehow finds the exploitation of the working class to exist first through slavery, then feudalism, then capitalism. He repeatedly embraces his hatred for capitalism and uses it to bemoan the class-structure of society. Wonderful crisp drawings

For a visual overview of Western architecture done in black & white line drawings this book is excellent. Informative captions illuminate the drawings as well. The text may be a bit trying but it's the visuals that carry the day - with many more pages full of well-drawn examples,both elevations, exteriors & some cross-sections included.Scale is always apparent with the inclusion of figures. If it's a detailed history you want go elsewhere. Here the pictures tell the story.

When I was in Paris, I met a gentlemen off the FDR metro stop on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées who asked me for directions. We got to talking a little bit and he got to telling me he was a playwright and in Paris for the first time to see a play. I asked him for the name of his play before we parted and he gave me all of the info and told me it was on Amazon. I read the preview and was instantly hooked and so bought the kindle version of it yesterday and just finished it.

It addresses existential crises that we all face, has a good progression of ideas and one of the craziest plot twists I've ever read. This author is a genius schooled in literature, philosophy and theology in a level deeper than most.

Just what I needed.

I ordered this so I could study on my own before my LPN classes start. Book is great. Small amount of being shopworn (bent cover) but no big deal. It did contain the DVD, unopened. I have not opened it yet, so I can't say if it works, but I would assume it's fine. With the book itself, I like that it has short quizzes at the end of each chapter. Great for self study! I would recommend this book.
