I give props for the totally incredible new world presented in this book.

Think Greek gods, Egyptians, deities, angels and so on, all living in some kind of other dimension with Limbo in the middle as a safe port to everyone where reapers are little more than slaves and souls are the coin.
Our main character, Lana is a reaper and not very good one because she often bends the rules to help souls. Suddenly she receives a promotion which is little more than a veiled death sentence though she doesn't know it at the time. I'd like to say I like her but she doesn't do much for me. I admit I get a headache just trying to follow her life around, not to mention I don't really like to read how little power she actually has over her own life. She is dropped in a political jungle she has no way of getting out of or manoeuvre.
Her romantic life is pretty nonexistent even after finding herself a boyfriend, one I gotta say I don't trust one bit. Too damn convenient for my taste. He starts up as a cocky and arrogant guy who can't stop flirting with her to a shy guy who blushes every time she looks at him. If that's not weird, I don't know what is. Besides we never actually get to watch them together and no, I'm not talking just about sex. The author seems to run as fast as a gazelle every time there is a chance at intimacy.
It seems to be interesting enough for me to read the next one but I can't be sure. It's too dry to hold my attention for long. The plot seems way too complex and convoluted for a first instalment. The characters need to be more fleshed out, more humane and a little more witty. They all seem to get incredibly boring sometimes. Not to mention the cheer number of characters is staggering. I can't even remember a third of them.

I really, really wanted to like this book...

This book has such a promising opening, and a very disappointing ending. I LOVE the world that the author has created: the entire book takes place in the afterlife, and it’s a different version of the afterlife than any I’ve seen proposed (and yet, it’s so simple, that I can’t believe I haven’t seen it before!). I like the characters and appreciate the author's sense of humor. About halfway through the book, my favorite quote appears: “Oh! Sweet Jesus! I can’t die now. I have a casserole in the oven!” Unfortunately, I should have stopped reading about two-thirds through. It seems as though anyone helping to edit the book did. The last third of the book is riddled with inconsequential characters, sentences that don’t make sense, useless information, and a plot that heads straight to nowhere. My only guess is that the author was hoping to sell a sequel by leaving the story line open, but it feels more like she fell asleep while telling a boring vacation story. The last third of the book also has a lot more spelling and grammatical errors. If you venture to read this book, do yourself a favor, and stop reading once they find the kid. (You’ll know what I mean.)

I hate it when I read great reviews & get my hopes up. Some of these glowing reviews here & on Goodreads have favorably compared this series to several of my favorite urban fantasy series, and unfortunately I went into this story with high expectations. Our heroine is NOT as humorous as Queen Betsy, nor is she as spunky as Sookie Stackhouse or as tough as Mercy Thompson. It's an okay story, no grammar issues--which is why it got 3 stars from me--but other than grossing me out a time or three, it just didn't grab me. Meh. Life is too short to read mediocre books.
