Amusing and old fashioned

This book is a long alphabtical list of literary faults by Ambrose Bierce (an American writer). It is mostly his own 'pet peeves' but this makes it amusing to read as he lists the correct way to say it, and often sounds very angry about the wrong way!! So I would recommend this book if you want to read about the formal 'correct' way to say anything, eg: 'I assumed a disguise' instead of 'I adopted a disguise'. He says you 'only adopt a child, not a disguise' :)

Caught Up with an Old Friend

When I was a young man I lived awhile with my stepgrandfather in San Diego, California. I remember he had a slim red volume called 'Write It Right', by Ambrose Bierce. It must have been a first edition, from around 1911, when he was around 21. He had penciled into the flyleaf, "He is at variance with Webster on several points." Gramps prided himself on good grammar and liked working crosswords and the Kingsley Double-Crostics that were published weekly at the back of the 'Saturday Review'. I enjoyed leafing through the Bierce, and noting with interest his preference for treating the noun 'the United States' as a plural. This, it seemed to me, reflected a conservative outlook that preceded, and resisted, federal efforts at promoting a strong sense of national unity. And that is where I place the value of this little volume, as an interesting historical relic of the English language as it was once spoken. Its standards are a lot tighter than our own, and for that reason I recommend it as a guide to the thought patterns of our ancestors living in that now remote time.

The man behind the curtain

It often happens when you're reading a book that you love that you wonder things like, "Why does this person act this way?" "Why is he/she such a jerk?" "What could have happened in this person's life to make them who they are in the present?" Most of the time, you don't get that chance. But in Under the Rainbow, Amalie Jahn gives us the opportunity.

In Ms. Jahn's extraordinary Clay Lion series, we saw little of Phil Johnson. He appeared to be a cold, callous, unfeeling man who almost universally saw people as merely a means to further his political career. As a young man, however, he was merely an idealistic go-getter trying to make a name for himself, hoping in the end to be able to reform healthcare to help individuals who weren't able to afford it, like his mother. In his dogged persistence to succeed, however, he uses his time-travel "trip" to make it happen, and then ... well, if you've read "Tin Men," you know how it all turns out.

"Under the Rainbow" was a very fast read and, like all of Ms. Jahn's work, very engaging and difficult to put down. I finished it in two settings, and I continue to marvel at her easy-flowing writing style. I look forward, as always, to reading her future works. And, in keeping with this series with its Wizard of Oz connections, I'd like to thank her for giving me this peek at "the man behind the curtain."

A must read!

This is a two-fold review, the first portion being expressions of a grandmother, and the second portion thoughts of my thirteen year old granddaughter, with whom I've read this entire series.
This brief yet profound sequel begins with what too many people in our country are currently dealing with: A deplorable healthcare system that worsens daily, making staying alive almost exclusively for the wealthy. With countless pharmaceutical prices increasing exponentially, especially cancer drugs, what can anyone do to change our political system? This prequel involves more time travel to help explain many things from Tin Men, but I was grabbed by Chapter 1 based on the aforementioned problem that has been plaguing America for too long now. But this short gives readers insight into Phil, so if you have not read Tin Men, please do & if you have read it, this will be great enlightenment about his persona.

From a 13year old: I have loved the Wizard of Oz for years, and this entire series adds so much meaning that I hope to someday read it to my children. Many lessons can be drawn from the characters actions, and I feel so in touch with them and their stories, I just want to keep reading more and to keep learning. I cried for Phil as I got to understand why he wasn't the nicest person to be around. Our childhoods make such an imprint on who we become, and the author was very smart to offer an explanation for those who might have wondered why he behaved badly.

Jahn has written a CLASSIC series that should be in every school curriculum.

Under the Rainbow

Under the Rainbow is the prequel to Amalie Jahn's series, The Clay Lion.
A short story, Ms. Jahn captures the emotions of an anxious, ambitious
young man making the wrong choices for the right reasons. The story is a
realistic depiction of how a drive to make a difference and find success
can compel an otherwise good and moral person to lose sight of their
values when their eyes are fixed only on a goal. Written in her
signature style, this story flows from page to page and is a pleasant,
easy read that alludes to what the rest of the series has to offer.
Recommended.
