A Beautiful story! Loved it!

‘The Echoes of Love’ is the story of Venetia Aston-Montagu, an twenty eight year old English woman living in the romantic city of Venice. Although this sounds like a fairy tale, Venetia wasn’t looking for love. She loves Venice and the beautiful history of the city, but since her first love broke her heart almost ten years ago, Venetia wasn’t a fan of men and romance. But one night, she meets Paolo Barone a handsome thirty eight year old with a reputation of being a Don Juan. Everything about Paolo makes Venetia want to run and hide. But Paolo doesn’t give up fast and soon Venetia find herself being under his spell. But there are a lot of secrets between them and since life hasn’t been easy on both of them they most conquer a lot to be with each other.

‘The Echoes of Love’ is unlike any other book I read. Hannah Fielding’s writing is like reading poetry. Her writing is very detailed and almost feels like your reading a book written in the Jane Austen era, although it takes place in the present. The way Hannah Fielding writes makes you able to almost ‘feel’ Venice, and the beautiful canals and bridges. I loved the way Hannah described Venice and Italy throughout this book. It definitely made me want to visit Italy and the beautiful towns.
Not only does Hannah describe the beautiful city but she also, very thoroughly, describes the Italian food. And boy did she make me hungry for Italian food.

The story of Venetia and Paolo was very beautiful. I loved reading about them and the way Paolo tried to woo Venetia. At times I found Venetia a little irritating because she just kept resisting and denying her own feelings. Of course I understood why she acted that way, I just wanted to tell her to stop being so difficult at times! (LOL)
This book was a beautiful love story. There is also a little mystery in this book and there are a lot of secrets. The one thing I found a little disappointing about this book was that I figured out early on what was going on. It made the revelation at the end of the book not as exciting as it was supposed to be.

But still, this book was an beautiful and very interesting read and I would definitely recommend it. Hannah Fielding’s writing is explicit and I can’t wait to read more from her. And a nice bonus, this book makes you learn a little Italian! ;)

THE ECHOES OF LOVE ! ANOTHER GREAT NOVEL BY HANNAH FIELDING! NOT TO MISS!

It was the striking cover and the romance of the title that prompted me to choose The Echoes of Love among so many novels that are offered today. The writing lifts the book out of the usual romance genre. I was captivated from the first lines by the world Ms Fielding created. Without leaving your chair you are transported to Italy . Though I have visited Venice and Florence in Tuscany , I have never been to Sardinia, but all through my reading the author’s beautiful detailed description made me feel I was just there with Paolo and Venetia , living their passionate love story. Neither the hero nor the heroine are simplistic characters, both have a past that tortures them, but both learn how to confront them, first alone, and then together. All in all a beautifully crafted book, the echoes of which will remain with you for a long time.

Nice descriptions. Daft ending.

This book started quite well. The establishing of the character and the tone of the novel was good, and there were some rather nice descriptions of setting, to uphold the romantic feel of the piece. However, right from the first paragraph clichés slipped in. “Heart skipped a beat.” And a ghostly figure reflected in a mirror that when she turns around is gone. Oh, I thought, I was actually excited about reading a well-written romance with a bit of originality.

Well, it is well written, with excellent formatting and lay out, although I’m not sure why it is brown. I didn’t notice any typos or glaringly obvious grammatical errors. Thinks to self, if I were really into this book, I wouldn’t be talking about how good the layout is in the second paragraph of my review. Yes, I was a little bit bored by this novel.

Hannah Fielding is great at physical descriptions. Her attention to detail is staggering. I did feel that there was perhaps too much description in minute detail, as I wanted the story to get going and not know who eats what and exactly what they eat. Unless pertinent to the plot, such descriptions hinder rather than help. I know the author wants to show us Venice, and descriptions are useful, but practically every paragraph was just a list of what they are eating, wearing and where they are located.

The plot is fairly typical of the genre: girl leaves troubled life behind her travels to the romantic city of Venice and falls for a handsome troubled man with a dark secret past. She likes/not likes him because he is a bit arrogant. They are drawn to each other and…well you get the picture. Venetia and Paolo seemed to gaze at each other for unrealistically long periods of time. Paolo comes across as stereotypical: he is suave and handsome and all knowing. “The shadow of dark stubble over Paolo’s jaw enhanced the masculinity of his bronzed face…” I’m sure that people who like romances in exotic locations will probably enjoy reading this rather predicable novel.

I felt that the book could use a bit of editing to make the narrative pacier and more enjoyable to read. Each chapter is so very long, I found myself wanting to skip long passages in order to get to the next chapter. I found the dialogue rather stilted, and often there purely to explain the history, or the plot

The sex scenes were so clichéd. Volcanoes erupting, throbbing climaxes, crescendos and wait, there’s more: “Venetia soared and swooped, crying out her ecstasy, sobbing and convulsing under the shattering power of the most intense orgasm she’d ever experienced.” Blimey! Towards the end of the book, they go at it like rabbits, only with more perfect climaxes. (I imagine, knowing nothing about rabbit sex.) He does some odd things to her like “Showered butterfly kisses down her throat.” I don’t about Venetia, but I wanted to gag at that point.

I really did want more of a complex plotline to keep me engaged and caring about what happened to the main characters. It seemed for most of the book that Paolo and Venetia just want to engage in the perfect sexual act. But it is a romance book so I shouldn’t really expect anything else. But, really, just what is “The secret core of her femininity”? Oh It’s her “…moist, silken pink petals” that he does things to so well that - “Venetia could feel her loins trembling; soon she would be flooded.” Just like Venice itself does every year.

Sorry, but, bleh. Then we’re off again with page after page of detailed descriptions of where they are going, what they are wearing, eating, and where they are dining. Story please – plot anytime soon?

There is a lot of sex and then long passages of expositions explaining either backstory or giving history lessons about Venice, which is okay, but again, where is the plot? There was a bit of action, besides the lovemaking, Paolo and Venetia have a car accident. Suspected foul play. Then more descriptions.

The so-called twist at the end was laughable I’m afraid. So silly and utterly far-fetched. The final sentence, well – yeuk –‘nough said.

Jos J. Eggermont, Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Physiology & Pharmacology, Department of Psychology, University of Calgary, Canada

Jos Eggermont was born in The Netherlands, and was educated at Leiden University (MSc in 1967, PhD in 1972, both in Physics). In 1978 he became Professor in experimental physics at Nijmegen University. In 1986 he became Professor at the University of Calgary, Canada in the Department of Psychology. In 1997 he was named Campbell McLaurin Chair for Hearing Deficiencies and joined the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. In 1989 he was elected in the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, in 1998 he was elected Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, and in 2014 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Miki Garcia is a journalist by training and a food aficionado by vocation. She obtained a Master's Degree in Journalism in England and is the author of two books: All About Ireland and How To Get Involved with International Organizations. She is an expert on Kapampangan culture and history and, though she has lived and traveled in nearly 100 countries, her greatest love is for the melting-pot food of the Philippines, where she lived for a year. She resides in San Francisco, California.

Luca Invernizzi Tettoni is a world-renowned photographer who has lived and worked in Asia since 1973. He specializes in books on Asian culture. Among his many publications are Tropical Asian Style, Balinese Gardens, Thai Style, The Tropical Spa and Contemporary Thai.

Theo Domini O. Zaragoza has a natural gift for cooking and an aptitude for creativity. He studied Food Styling at the Culinary Institute of America in New York. Amazed at the accuracy

As a Filipino, I'm amazed and delighted by the cultural accuracy of this book. I chuckle to myself every time I crack this book open. For instance, for the "vegetables" chapter, the author openly admits that "Filipinos are not known for their consumption of vegetable-only dishes". I've had this problem every time I'm invited to a "cultural potluck" and someone in the group is vegetarian -- it just doesn't work! Even Pinakbet, the quintessential vegetable dish of the Philippines, is flavored with bagoong (shrimp paste). I usually end up just making a dessert.

Here's another one: "Pulburon cookies... have become popular pasalubong (gifts or souvenir items) purchased by people who visit the Philippines for friends back home". I thought this was just a thing within my family!

As for the recipes, they are extremely accurate as well. The Kare-Kare (oxtail stew) calls for regular old sweet peanut butter, not that "all natural" stuff. It also doesn't make you grind the peanuts yourself. It presents each recipe just as a REAL Filipino would cook it, not some "gourmet" permutation.

I highly recommend this book not only as a cookbook, but also as a cultural guide to Filipino cuisine.

Great cookbook!

I bought this book because it features some Kapamangan recipes. I know the Kapampangans are well-known in the Philippines for their fine cuisine.
I have tried some desert recipes and they were so yummy (especially Leche Flan and yemas my personal favorites) and my friends loved them too. I will update this review once I have tried other recipes in this book. I can't wait to try adobo...The book is glossy shiny good quality print, with mouthwatering photographs!

I've looked at Filipino cookbooks before and this one has a great lay-out that makes learning how to make Filipino food easy and fun. Great explanation of things to know before starting to cook. Pictures are great.

A well-established and trusted sourcebook

This book is primarily a sourcebook of cardiac EKG tracings; visually, as much as seventy percent of the content consists of these tracings. The book is designed to assist a wide variety of medical professionals (e.g., anesthesiologists, internists, surgeons, doctors in training, nurses, and cardiac technicians) to identify arrhythmias using tracings. In addition, the book offers summary advice on treating each arrhythmia. The tracings illustrate virtually every variation of cardiac arrhythmia that a professional might encounter in clinical practice. The tracings are presented with detailed descriptions and clear explanations. There is also information on anti-arrhythmic drugs, pacemakers, defibrillators, and catheter ablation. At the end, there are over fifty pages of tracings without descriptions or headings; these are designed so that users can test what they've learned. There is an answer key at the end of this self-test section.

So, why would a complete medical novice want to read and review this book? In short: because I've recently become fascinated trying to interpret cardiac tracings and to imagine what is actually happening in the human heart to produce those readings. It all started with a recent college-level class based on the remarkable book, "Sync: The Emerging Science of Spontaneous Order" by the Cornell mathematician Steven Strogatz. We were a group of eighteen seniors (most with advanced degrees in math, engineering, and physics, but also a few science-loving humanities majors like myself). All had to complete an independent study related to the book and then present their findings in an hour-long PowerPoint lecture. I choose "The electrophysiology of the human heart: unraveling the biological mechanisms behind our regularly (and irregularly) beating hearts." I quickly found that the best sources for studying this topic were the large number of college-level YouTube videos supporting A/V learning for medical students. Over the course of the next two months, I must have examined more than 60 hours of relevant videos, most aimed at training doctors and other medical professionals. When I finally felt the need for a text, I bought and read relevant chapters of the non-cardiac-specialist medical textbook "Pathophysiology of Heart Disease," by Leonard S. Lilly. The subject fascinated me; my PowerPoint lecture was a success; and I ended up with a newfound love for studying cardiac tracings. And that, of course, is how this book entered my life.

Perhaps because I'd reviewed Lilly's "Pathophysiology of Heart Disease" here on Amazon, the automated Amazon Vine system offered me a copy of Bennett's book to read and review. [I'm an Amazon Top Reviewer and generally read and review literature and social science books that I get free from Amazon in exchange for an honest review.] I was thrilled that Amazon offered me this book and eagerly snatched it up. It seemed like just the right book to feed my growing interest in understanding heart arrhythmias and trying to read cardiac tracings.

After many hours spent examining and reading this book, I can easily see why it has become one of the classic textbooks in this subject. It is clearly written, well organized, and full of countless EKG tracings illustrating every point. I loved the test section at the end. My pattern-seeking brain was delighted and challenged.

As a retired academic librarian with a great deal of experience evaluating and buying college textbooks across all subject disciplines, it is obvious that this book could not have reached it's 8th edition and be published by one of the world's preeminent science textbook publishers, if it were not a highly regarded and trusted sourcebook. If you need this book for your medical studies, or if you are just interested in the topic, like me, you will not be disappointed. This book makes a difficult subject not only easy to understand, but also very interesting.

A good text on the interpretation and treatment of the main abnormalities in cardiainc rhythm

This is a very good medical text aimed at general medical students, junior doctors and other clinicians where their field of work interlaces with this area of medicine. For those that have specialized in this field, may not necessarily benefit from this edition. The lay person can also `profit' from the text; however, there is a prerequisite need for the non-medical reader to understand certain terms and foundation principles of ECG testing and interpretation, as one reviewer has commented `it's best left to the experts'. The text is clear and concise and to the point; the examples given are straightforward and comprehensive, with good diagrams and charts. The most up to date investigative methodology and good practice is given here. Time is spent on interpretation and diagnosis.
There is a good Q and A section which helps to test how well the individual as understood the topic areas discussed.

Great cardiac EKG strips and information packed

This book is a very good medical text aimed for medical students, interns, and other clinicians. This is primarily a source of cardiac EKG tracings, it is designed to assist a wide variety of medical professionals (e.g., anesthesiologists, internists, surgeons, interns, medical students, nurses, and cardiac technicians) to identify arrhythmias. In addition, the book offers summary advice on treating each arrhythmia and the principles of ECG testing and interpretation. The strips offered illustrate virtually all the variations of cardiac arrhythmia that the clinician may encounter in their daily clinical practice. The strips are presented with detailed descriptions and clear explanations. There is also information on anti-arrhythmic drugs, pacemakers, defibrillators, as well as catheter ablation; this text offers a very comprehensive outline with great diagrams, strips and charts that are valuable tools. At the end, there are over fifty pages of EKG strips without descriptions or headings; these are designed so that users can test what they've learned. There is an answer key at the end of this self-test section. There is a good Q and A section which helps to test how well the individual as understood the topic areas discussed.

After examining and reading this book, it is crystal clear why it has become one of the classic textbooks in this subject matter. It is clearly written, well organized, and full of EKG strips. Great source for all medical professionals whether you are just interested in the topic or brushing up on your skill set you will not be disappointed. This book makes a difficult subject not only easy to understand, but also interesting. Highly recommended for medical and nursing students or those professionals who need to brush up on your skills.

A Wonderful, Contrarian Study of Urban Issues

Edward C. Banfield's most important work, Unheavenly City (and its revised edition, Unheavenly City Revisited) was and remains a dramatic challenge to the traditional concepts of urban renewal originating in the New Deal. The book was intensely controversial when it was published, and it's not hard to see why from reading it, as Banfield challenges almost every tenet of the existing urban studies orthodoxy. From the impact of minimum wage laws to the importance of social class, the author touches every important issue that faces the underclass in cities, with often surprising recommendations.
Conservatives will appreciate what is probably the best statement of a conservative plan and thinking about the plight of cities, but Banfield's meticulous use of careful arguments and research make the book useful for those who disagree with him as well. An excellent book for anyone who wants to examine the problems of cities and challenge their own assumptions, with bold recommendations for helping those trapped in poverty.

This book is one of the most read, and debate documents in America today.

During President Nixons short term in office, he commissioned a Congressional Study to answer the question, "Why can't one of the richest nations in the world (at that time it was America) eliminate proverty. The results of the study were so controversial that the Study was never released to the Public, but copies are still available in the Congressional Library today. The main problem of the study is that many people who read it concluded that the reason that America could not eliminate poverty was due to "racial prejudince and practices. Nothing could be further from the truth. Edward Banfield took it upon himself to do his own study in order to answer the same question. You will notice that the title of the book has the key work in it, "Revisited". He had already written the "Unheavenly City" and it was so poorly misinterpreted that he came back and wrote the "Unheavenly City Revisited" to try to explain that the reason that America could not elimiate poverty, was not in fact due to "racial overtones", but in fact was due to "the future orientations of generations of people that created four differnent Classes of people: !) the Upper Class; 2) the Middle Class; 3) the Working Class; and 4) the Lower Class. What caused people to end up in which class had nothing to do with racial matters, it had every thing to do with the "future orientations" of the people with each class. The Upper Class held visions and dreams beyond their own life times, and because of this remarkable future orientation they built their wealth and success so that they could have an impact on the world they lived in, and could leave a legacy and inheritance behind. The Middle Class had a long term future orientation that allowed them to dream and have a vision of continuing to improve both their social and financial status during their lifetimes. The Working Class did not have long term future orienations, but mostly focused on living for one season to the next in the agricultural farming and ranching business, or from pay check to pay check as employees. Due to their lack of long term furture dreams and no vision beyond one season to another or from pay check to pay check, they were the victim of circomstances and became trapped in that class. The Poor Class did not have any future orientation, they continued to breed generation after generations of people that lived from one moment to the next, continuing to become enslaved in the poverty trap. This book is a well documented piece of research. It is a most read for anyone that truly wants to understand why poverty cannot be eliminated in America, and why racial factors have very little to do with poverty. It is a must read to any one who actually believers that "racial matters" are the cause of poverty in America. The very myth that racial matters have everything to do with poverty actually helps perpetuates "racial biases" in America. Be prepared to have an eye opening experience.

Live in a US city? then welcome to Hell

Hell? Yes, that is the general impression of urban America that you are left with after reading 'The Unheavenly City Revisited'. There are a couple of reasons for this. The original book 'The Unheavenly City' was first published in 1970 and then 'Revisited' in 1974. In many ways urban America is quite different today than it was then. It is no coincidence that an entire chapter is devoted to riots. Watts in 1965 and Detroit in 1967 were still very much a topic of discussion by urban planners. The main reason though for the impression of an urban hell is because that's exactly what the author believed we were creating. The main purpose of this book was to challenge and refute traditional approaches to urban planning. One of Banfields main contentions was that "we do not know and can never know what the real nature of the problem is, let alone what might work to alleviate or solve it". He wanted to make urban planning more multidisciplinary, bring in new approaches and ideas and broaden the debate.
He broadened the debate all right. There was such a storm of controversy that surrounded 'The Unheavenly City' that the author had to take the unusual step of publishing the 'Revisited' version only four years later largely to provide clarity and explain some of the more contentious points that he raised. For instance, the chapter entitled 'The Imperatives of Class' generated a lot of heat. Banfield was accused of saying that the lower class was synonymous with African Americans and the poor. He didn't say that. It didn't matter though because by bringing it up and dancing around it for an entire chapter he left himself open to critics who said 'Well it's what you meant even if you didn't say it.
Not all the criticism was related to his arguments and certainly not all of it was fair. It is clear that a lot of the criticism has to do with the fact that the book was written by someone who was not an urban planner. Banfield is a social scientist and his book reads like a philosophy of city life or urban psychology. The professionals did not like this approach, moreso because Banfield was critical of their motives "the reformer wants to improve the situation of the poor, the black, the slum dweller, and so on, not so much to make them better off materially as to to make himself and the whole society better off morally".
The book is recommended because of it's historical significance and because it gives an interesting perspective on the debate about urban policy thirty years ago. Be prepared to reread some sections though because the author does ramble and remember it was a text book so the writing style is dry.

Another Great Read

I've read every book to date, so I guess that makes me a Dr. Fingal Flaherty O'Reilly groupie. I was looking forward to finding out what happened to his first wife, Deidre, and now that chapter is closed. Patrick Taylor's depiction of O'Reilly's experience in World War II was both interesting and informative as he always stays close to true events and "the way things were" in the time period about which he is writing. To me, it was another great read about one of my favorite characters. But, then, I love all the characters in Taylor's Irish Country Doctor series.

Irish Country series are wonderful stories.

We're hooked on Patrick Taylor's Irish Country series. If you liked James Herriot's books about a veterinarian's life in rural England between the wars, you'll probably enjoy these books. Taylor's setting varies within the series between late 1930s-1940s to 1960s in a small Irish town. The primary character is a general practitioner physician with the townspeople and others as supporting characters. Begin with Irish Country Doctor to become familiar with setting and personalities. Then continue the series, coming to be very fond of the interactions.

The tale spans decades giving an insight into the customs and traditions of the times. There are also history lessons that are subtlety sprinkled throughout the story. Making significant use of archival sources and documentation, Jazz Noir seeks to correct this oversight, placing the films discussed in their proper historical context and utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that gives equal weight to the films―including such notables as Phantom Lady, I Want to Live!, and Taxi Driver―and to the indelible music that accompanied them.

In so doing, it corrects a great many misunderstandings about this complex, ideologically tinged relationship. Television noirs of the 1950s and 1960s, as well as the cinematic neo-noirs of the 1990s, have used jazz and jazz-flavored music extensively, thus giving rise to the misconception that the genre and the musical style were always intertwined. But as author David Butler reveals, it was only when modern jazz had a number of prominent white exponents that it gained any kind of exposure in Hollywood cinema, and even then such exposure was limited. Nevertheless, the broad range of jazz styles was well suited to the broad range of films noir, and the historical approach Butler takes gives due weight to such considerations. The film noir of the 1940s are as different from the film noir of the 1950s as the jazz of the 1940s is from the jazz of the 1950s, and Jazz Noir provides a unique and valuable study of a rich aesthetic synergy.
