While Men Slept: A Biblical and Historical Account of the New Universal Christianity, by Kerby F. Fannin

This book provides a biblically and historically documented account of the progression of Christian theology as it moved away from a belief in objective truth and toward a belief in subjective truth. As such, it is moving the world toward a belief in Universalism. This book will help the discerning Christian see how Satan is trying to accomplish his centuries-old plan to deceive the whole world into denying the saving sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. To accomplish the plan, Satan is using the Spirit of Error to subtly counterfeit the Word and Spirit of God to lead the world into a new universal Christianity.

Review
This very informative book deserves the very highest recommendation. -- Jay Green, Sr., Editor, Interlinear Greek Hebrew Bible, September 19, 2002

From the Publisher
This book was written to help shed light on many things that have been performed in secret, under the cover of darkness, which has been behind the developing new universal Christianity. The work is presented believing that if one can see the unfolding of historically documented events in the light of the Word of God, he will, perhaps, be able to discern truth from error.

The purpose of this book, therefore, is not to dispute about the shades of meanings of words, to argue about Bible versions or manuscripts, or to debate about various spiritual or theological movements. Neither is this book intended to criticize those who have differing theological views or social perspectives. Instead, it is the goal of this book to humbly present the factual evidence to help the reader to get to know some of the people and the underlying agenda that led up to the modern process of redefining Christianity. The focus of this book is toward understanding more about the "who and why" of those that have been working for centuries to lay the foundations of a new universal Christianity.

From the Author
While learning that God reveals Himself to us through nature, it took me many years to discover that the truth I had been searching for in nature is but a shadow of the real truth, that being the spiritual things of God. Having given me the gift of reason, it was God, through His Holy Spirit, who brought me to search for truth. I soon found that truth did not lie in my reason, which was the filter through which I interpreted the things that I observed in nature. Instead, I found that the truth I was searching for could only be found in God who, through His Word, created all of nature, including my reason.

In my search, it soon became evident to me that God is Truth. Through the work of my reason and my faith, I accepted that there is one true God. I eventually came to my present understanding that the Word of God is the revelation of God to man. It then became clear to me that the one true God revealed Himself through His Word by His will through the inspiration of His prophets and apostles as recorded in the Scriptures, which were supernaturally preserved. The Word of God was also revealed by the manifestation of God Himself, known as Jesus.

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness but rather expose them!
By Steve Rowe
Wow! Incredible book!!!! While I have done much research into topics like the "emergent church," "social gospel," "contemplative prayer," and other false teachings that are creeping into the church and in some cases taking individual churches captive, I've never read another book that so clearly lays out (nearly every area of deception) what is happening not only in the church, but what we see happening in our world. Extremely well documented, and though there is a lot of history, don't let that scare you off. Not being a church history person I found this book to read more like a thriller or spy novel, often times on the edge of my seat waiting to see what is going to be exposed next. In fact, once I started it, I could hardly put it down and finished reading in one week. Every Christian should read this book, it's all as the title suggests Biblically and Historically accurate. Christians should know, if you read this book as the author suggests having prayed beforehand for wisdom and a desire to know truth (allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you into truth) your eyes will be opened to the seducing spirits, and doctrines of demons that the Bible warns us about. Especially as the day draws closer to our Lord's return and we see more and more darkness setting in, the flock of God needs to be aware of what is and has been taking place, often times right under our noses. God will use this book to show you Satan's plan to lead the church into a one world religious system. You will also learn the subtle tactics that the enemy uses to introduce false teaching and heresies into the church. In fact, having done much research I was aware of many of the things described in this book and yet I was shocked to learn just how complex, interwoven the enemy's devices are, and how much they have infiltrated our churches and society. Buy copies for yourself and friends, then buy copies for your neighbors, co-workers, church leaders etc. As a followup, I recommend a DVD series entitled, "Wide is the Gate" by Caryl Matrisciana and Brannon Howse's books or DVD's "Grave Influence," and "Religious Trojan Horse." It would appear that the "great falling away" as described in 2 Thessalonians 2 is well underway, believers must be vigilant in seeking truth, and praying for discernment, much of what seems right to man is nothing more than Satan's poison to lead us away from the simplicity that is in Christ. "While Men Slept" by Kerby Fannin will show you how "wolves" in "sheep's clothing" have crept into the church, the methods that are being used to deceive the flock so that you can protect yourself and your friends and family from the great deception taking place. Remember, this is not conspiracy theory, what is happening is exactly what the Bible said would happen. Though I'm glad it's not more expensive, this book would still be well worth the price even if it was double or triple the current price. The research that went into this book must have been tremendous, and it covers just about everything I see happening in our current day. My recommendation is that even if there's a topic of great interest to you, don't read ahead or use this book as a reference tool, at least not until you've read it from cover to cover first. Each page builds on what was previously said. Sometimes you might wonder why all the detail or specifics about a certain person or situation and then later in the book the dots will be connected (the discerning reader will recognize that the author could not have done this work without Holy Spirit led inspiration, it's laid out in such a way that would be impossible for man), but if you try to open up the book in the middle and read about something without having read the pages before you will cheat yourself because first what you read probably won't make sense, and secondly you will have missed the background information necessary to understand how deep and complex, intertwined and interwoven all this stuff is and how deep Satan's web of deception runs. This book certainly does as the Bible commands, to "expose the unfruitful works of darkness." If you have stumbled upon this book, trust that the Lord led you to it, and know that Satan doesn't want you to read it. Get your copy today, there's too much at stake. May God grant you wisdom, revelation, open eyes, and that you will come to a knowledge of the truth. We can't afford to be blind . . . many still have yet to come to know Christ and the enemy is working very hard to lead many astray and to deceive if possible, even the elect. Please buy this book, you won't be disappointed.

Great Summary of Major Influences on 20th Century Church
By Jerry Prugar
This book is a great compilation of the events, ambitions, deceptions, planning, and people who influenced the doctrines and errors of the 20th century church. Fannin has provided documentation for his claims and exposes how the 19th century church cast Jesus Christ aside and enthroned Reason as sovereign. He exposes Westcott & Hort, not as the unaware translators who made inadvertent errors, but as somewhat minor accomplices in a plan to rewrite God's Word to suit their beliefs. This book provides documentation of the deception that I and my church history teachers have been unaware of and when informed of disregarded to avoid being divisive. The deception was more intentional than I ever imagined. I could not put the book down and read all 600 pages in 5 days. This is a must read for those interested in church history. It was a great follow up to Heresies by Harold O.J. Brown.

Excellent Fact Filled Book !
By Frank
The other reviewers have stated almost exactly my thoughts on this book. I will add that just the research Dr. Fannin has done for this book is tremendous. This book is filled with history but it reads like a mystery novel. What the Catholic church did in the "Gunpowder Plot" was unbelievable! It's obvious why we are not taught these things in the schools or colleges. Then much later, the men that were responsible for the origens of the modern versions of the Bible were wicked men, no doubt.

Authors like Gail Riplinger, Dr. Fannin, David Cloud, and many, many others will be rewarded by the Lord for their efforts.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.-- Acts 16:31 God bless.

The Myth of Sex Addiction, by David J. Ley PhD. Author of the forthcoming Ethical Porn For Dicks A Man's Guide to Responsible Viewing Ple

The media today is filled with powerful men in trouble for their sexual behaviors, and invariably, they are diagnosed as sexual addicts. Once, these behaviors were considered a moral failing, but now they are viewed as evidence of a fictitious disease, that of "sexual addiction." The concept of sexual addiction is a controversial one because it is based on poor research and subjective moral judgments. Despite claims to the contrary, sex addiction is not a medically or scientifically accepted diagnosis. Sex addiction is a belief system, supported by faith, conviction and religious principles, that represents an attack on sexuality. Labeling these behaviors as sex addiction asserts a false, dangerous myth that undermines personal responsibility. Not only does this supposed epidemic of sex addiction mislabel male sexuality as dangerous and unhealthy, but it destroys our ability to hold people accountable for their behaviors. By labeling males as weak and powerless before the onslaught of desire and the churning tide of lust, we take away those things that men should live up to: personal responsibility; integrity; self-control; independence; accountability; self-motivation; honor; respect for self and others.

In The Myth of Sex Addiction, Dr. David Ley presents the cultural history, moral judgments and junk science underlying this alleged disorder. He exposes the subjective values embedded in the concept, as well as the significant economic factors that drive the label of sex addiction in clinical practice and the popular media. Ley outlines how this label represents a social attack on many forms of sexuality--male sexuality in particular--as well as presenting the difficulty this label creates in holding people responsible for their sexual behaviors. Going against current assumptions and trends, Ley debunks the idea that sex addiction is real. Instead, he suggests that the high-sex behaviors of some men is something that has been tacitly condoned for countless years and is only now labeled as a disorder as men are being held accountable to the same rules that have been applied to women. He suggests we should expect men to take responsibility for sexual choices, rather than supporting an approach that labels male sexual desire as a "demonic force" that must be resisted, feared, treated, and exorcised.

Ley asks whether sexual addiction is a bona fide ailment or merely a "culturally bound concept." Ley suggests that, like it or not, "sexual behaviors involve choice." Ley makes a persuasive argument, with case studies and ample references to the work of other psychologists to flesh out his case. Publishers Weekly

Psychologist David Ley's rousing new book, "The Myth of Sex Addiction," expresses concern over the slippery ease with which America's mainstream media and burgeoning "addictionology industry" have seemingly conspired to transform a debatable diagnosis into a foregone conclusion. Ian Kerner, CNN Health

I cannot stress enough how important this book is, not just to the helping professions but to the general public. If you are a teacher, therapist or just a sexual person, I cannot encourage you enough to read this book. It contains an enormous amount of data, is well written, has a great index and end notes.Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality

For anyone who has cringed once too often at the term "sex addiction"--or questioned the blanket use of "addiction" as an explanation for behavior that is really a matter of moral choice--Ley's demolition of the bad science and worse reasoning behind the sex addiction industry will be refreshing. The Weekly Standard

Ley argues that the label of sex addiction undermines our efforts to enforce expectations of responsibility. The writing style is personal and easy to follow, and the book is well referenced with frequent case histories to clarify points. Highly recommended. . Choice - American Library Association

Ley, a clinical psychologist and director of a behavioral health clinic, examines the position that the diagnosis of sex addiction is heavily influenced by social norms and values and is not a legitimate medical condition. He shows how what is labeled sex addiction is based on culture's social norms and covers a multitude of mostly male behavior. The fact that this behavior may be in conflict with social norms does not mean the individual has a psychiatric condition. In addition, the author argues, telling people their behavior is uncontrollable is a self-fulfilling prophecy. In chapters with titles like "Gender and Libido" and "Ignored Aspects of Masculinity," Ley examines the range of male sexuality and how that range is different from that of females. When norms are set based on female behavior, normal male behavior can be construed as pathological. "The label of sex addiction," writes Ley, "undermines our efforts to enforce expectations of responsibility, holding ourselves, and especially men, responsible for their choices and actions." The writing style is personal and easy to follow, and the book is well referenced with frequent case histories to clarify points. Summing Up: Highly recommended. (CHOICE)

Sex addiction and its attendant diagnosed celebrities and reality TV shows may have been wholeheartedly embraced by the media, but this work of pop psychology takes issue with what clinical psychologist Ley (Insatiable Wives: Women Who Stray and the Men Who Love Them) deems a dubious disorder. Here, Ley asks whether sexual addiction is really a bona fide ailment or merely a "culturally bound concept reflecting changing social views of sexuality rather than medicine or scientific research." Ley suggests that the label of "addiction" removes the issue of morality from the conversation, whereas in fact--whether we like it or not--he asserts that "sexual behaviors involve choice." However, Ley acknowledges the appeal of calling it an addiction, quoting an anonymous ex-spouse of a so-called sex addict, who affirmed that it would've been easier to cope with her husband's serial infidelity had it been the product of impulses literally beyond his control. Ley makes a thoughtful and persuasive argument, using case studies and ample references to the work of other psychologists to flesh out his case. While serving as an excellent resource on sex addiction, Ley's study also sheds light on the myriad cultural and sociological factors that influence relationships. (Publishers Weekly)

Ley has clearly thrown down the gauntlet, and hopefully the debate will continue. (CNN)

I cannot stress enough how important this book is, not just to the helping professionals but to the general public who get the read and hear (incessantly) about someone famous who is called a "sex addict"....If you are a teacher, therapist, or just a sexual person, I cannot encourage you enough to read this book. It contains an enormous amount of data, is well written, and has a great index and endnotes. (Electronic Journal Of Human Sexuality)

For anyone who has cringed once too often at the term “sex addiction”—or questioned the blanket use of “addiction” as an explanation for behavior that is really a matter of moral choice—Ley’s demolition of the bad science and worse reasoning behind the sex addiction industry will be refreshing. (The Weekly Standard)

Dr. David Ley raises crucial questions in his latest book—questions that demand serious consideration before we allow American society to drift even further toward declaring all pleasure potentially dangerous and pathological. Ley shows that the puritanism underlying our politics may also be distorting our medical sciences. This book is well informed, well argued, and well worth your time.

(Christopher Ryan Ph.D, Co-author of Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins of Modern Sexuality)

David Ley's book raises one important question after another about the nature of sexuality, the social phenomenon of "sex addiction," and the effects of our pathologizing so much of Americans' sexual feelings and behavior. (Marty Klein)

This book’s exploration of the available science will fascinate any reader. Beyond observing that there is no credible body of evidence to support the notion of sexual addiction, David Ley describes many historical problems in attempting to define it.... Ley’s writing style is highly accessible and entertaining. The structure and layout are excellent. He is meticulous in providing citations for his assertions, often preferring direct quotes to summaries. (ATSA Fourm)

From the Author
The public is inundated with the labels of sex addiction, inappropriately and unethically applied to public figures involved in sex scandals. The media and countless addiction professionals present this disorder as though it is real, supported by science and accepted by the medical community. But, the reality is that sex addiction is NOT a valid diagnosis, is not accepted by the American medical, psychiatric or psychological communities and associations. There are many treatment centers and sex addictionologists who will take your money to treat sex addiction, but there is NO scientific evidence that their treatment works, or is worth your money. There is a strong scientific and medical skepticism and disdain for the idea of sex addiction, a debate that is not represented by the media. Instead, the media uses black and white junk science concepts like sex addiction to grab the audience's attention, creating a moral panic and using fear of sex to command a share of audience attention.

Though there are countless popular books that will tell you that you, your husband, wife and political leaders are or might be addicted to sex, there are no books that carefully examine the reality of the claims made by the true believers in sex addiction. This book was written to present the other side of the argument. I believe that the realities of this debate need to be public and transparent, to allow people to see that sex is not a disease, and that sexuality is a healthy, integral and important part of people's lives. Treating sex as dangerous, unhealthy and destructive stigmatizes many people, including men, women and the LGBT community. The label of sex addiction gives false excuses for the selfish, narcissistic and destructive acts that some husbands, leaders and celebrities engage in, and distracts from the real issues involved in their choices.

We need to demand that instead of simply calling someone a sex addict, we start asking the real questions of why and how people make the choices they do, whether it involves sex or not. And we need to demand responsibility and ethics, from our husbands and wives, from addiction treatment providers, from the media, and from our political leaders. This starts by exposing sex addiction as a shell game, a game that is using smoke and mirrors to hide moral judgments and to deny personal responsibility.

A great read
By Frederick M. Toates
It seems that one either loves or hates this book. Of the comments on Amazon USA, almost all reviewers either give it a maximum 5 stars or a minimum 1 star, the `loves' strongly outweighing the `hates'. The 3 UK reviewers were less generous. If possible, I would have given it 4.5 but, not being allowed this, I opted for 5 stars. I did this, not because I agree with its central premise that sex addiction is a myth - I don't - but because of how well written it is and because of the obvious help that it has brought to many people who presumably have been falsely diagnosed. Dr Ley's scholarship in assembling fascinating and highly relevant case studies is nothing short of amazing. If the book were reframed as, say, `Uses and Abuses of Sex Addiction', I would unhesitatingly give it 5 stars. I must confess that, if I had read it before submitting my own book `How Sexual Desire Works: The Enigmatic Urge' to the publishers, I might well have added a question mark after the chapter heading `Sexual addiction'.

Three fundamental issues seem to run through the debate, as follows.

First, is a moral agenda driving much of the discussion, forcing some people to see their perfectly healthy consensual activity as wrong, thereby causing much unnecessary distress and the seeking of expensive therapy? The answer that Dr Ley gives is a very convincing `yes'. However, does everyone who claims, or appears, to have an addiction fit this category? I would say `no'.

Secondly, do (so-called) sexually-addicted people have free will and agency over their behaviour or have they lost control? Here Dr Ley sails into rather treacherous waters, since the issue of free-will and determinism is one that has eluded philosophers from at least the time of the ancient Greeks. There is simply no answer to it. However, there are answers to the related question - does what you believe about free-will and determinism make a difference to how you behave? It appears that it does, so a belief in free-will might give some people a realistic sense of agency.

Dr Ley appears to recognize the limits of the notions of free will, when he writes (page 173) "When these chemicals are raging in our brain, we can often do nothing but think about our new lover...". Can sexually-addicted people restrain their behaviour and thereby show themselves in one sense to be in control? Yes, Dr Ley and I agree here - they can, as indicated by, say, their controlled use of a car in finding their next sexual outlet or their restraint in the face of, say, a potential police raid on a brothel. But so can heroin addicts show great skill and control in, say, house-breaking or forging checks. The compulsive hand-washer can show restraint under some conditions as can even to a very limited degree the sufferer from Tourette's syndrome. The issue is surely that in all such cases there is (i) the imposition of a goal that arises outside the conscious mind and against the will and (ii) distress is involved in resisting its pull. How much stress is involved to define an addiction or compulsion is surely not something for which a scientific answer can be given.

Thirdly, the issue of whether sex can be classified as a potential addiction is equally elusive and not open to absolute scientific arbitration. It all hinges on first articulating the properties of an unambiguous addiction, such as to heroin. Then we need to see how many of these defining features are shared with sex. It depends upon your cut-off point for how many boxes and which boxes need to be ticked in order to include sex as being usefully classified as potentially an addiction. I recall that the tobacco industry tried desperately to convince us that nicotine was not addictive, whereas addiction researchers know otherwise. As the researcher Donald L. Hinton argues, consider two people spending hours on the Internet, wishing that they could quit but finding it impossible. According to DSM-5, the first is gambling for money and would be classified as an addict, whereas the second is gambling for the perfect porno image and would not be classified as an addict. This makes no sense to me.

Evidence published since this book appeared shows changes in the dopaminergic regions of the brain of sexually addicted people, somewhat comparable to that of chemical addiction (see Donald L. Hinton, amongst others). Is this a box to tick? I would say so.

On page 79, Dr. Ley argues: "One hundred percent of the people who seek sex addiction treatment have some other major mental illness, including alcohol and drug addictions, mood disorders, and personality disorders." He does not give a citation for this claim. R.C. Reid and B.N. Carpenter give the figure of 38% as those patients with no other disorder apart from hypersexuality. We do not know how many, if any, of the parallel disorders were the consequence of the hypersexuality, as opposed to the assumption that they lie in its causation. Although I am not a clinician, I would suggest that someone presenting with combined sex and cocaine addiction (both engaging brain dopaminergic systems) would need to have both activities addressed.

On page 101, Dr. Ley writes: "What are the environmental and personal factors that lead some individuals to choose sex, or alcohol, or drugs, or gambling in response to their brain's functioning, and what are the things that lead other people with that same type of brain chemistry to be able to overcome those predispositions, and not engage in such addictive or destructive behaviors?" A good question and I would suggest an early potent exposure to the object of the later addiction plus run-away dopamine sensitization as a positive feedback system (see recent studies by Marco Leyton and Paul Vezina).

In short a very good read, best done with some caution.

A Testimonial Not A Review
By Donald F. Sullivan TN Technologies
I was going to write a review for Dr. David Ley's new book, The Myth Of Sex Addictions, and then I realized that what I really wanted to write was more of a testimonial, but there was no category listed for that. So maybe I can combine the two in such a way that my intentions will be clear to you.

Ley's book was one of maybe three books which I have read, that I can say without any reservation, had a transformational effect on my life. The other two were AA's Big Book and Self-Defeating Behaviors, by by Milton Cudney and Robert Hardy (Jan. 1993).

I have been fighting what I called maladaptive sexual behavior for over sixty years. I am currently seventy-two years old. I stopped drinking and using illegal drugs in 1986 and conquered a three and a half pack a day cigarette habit in 1987 so I am familiar with how difficult it can be to overcome self-defeating behavior.

Ley addresses three key points in the debate about sex addictions. His first point is that there is no clinical or hard science that supports the addictive nature of the sexual function in human beings. Secondly, he shows how normal sexuality varies greatly and is related to many social, physical and genetic factors and is expressed much differently by gender.

I was especially impressed by Chap Two of the book that delineates the difference between true addictions, alcoholism or other drugs, and behaviors that may be thought of as addictive, sex, food, gambling, shopping ad nauseam.

Throughout the book Dr. Ley uses case study examples to illustrate how male sexuality is and has always been different from female sexuality for reasons that are related to both physical factors and Darwinian evolutionary forces. Which leads to his conclusion that the concept of sex addiction is really more of an attempt to impose a set of values on society that are driven by religious and or feminine ideals than science and, which are in conflict with the true nature of male sexuality.

In the final chapter of the book Dr. Ley does a great job of showing how the sex therapy treatment industry and the mass media have colluded to try and foist the idea of sex addiction on the public and how dangerous this is to both the individual suffering from some of these behavior problems and society as a whole.

I stated that I meant this review to be more of a testimonial to the book and a comment on the transformative experience reading it was for me. I find it difficult to put the reasons for this experience into words. I mentioned some of the parts that I found remarkable, but for me reading it was more of a holistic experience rather than an educational process.

Ley's style is a bit formal and probably would be better in a text book, but he presents his information in a clear and concise matter. This is not a self-help book and if you are looking for that you will have to go to the sex addiction bunch of 12 stepping people that he mentions and decries.

In summary, I would strongly recommend The Myth Of Sex Addiction to both those who have experienced the needless pain, shame and guilt that can accompany a diagnosis of sex addiction and for those who wish to better understand how this diagnosis has gained such currency in todays world.

Opto-Mechanical Systems Design, Fourth Edition, Two Volume Set, by Paul Yoder, Daniel Vukobratovich

Opto-Mechanical Systems Design, Fourth Edition is different in many ways from its three earlier editions: coauthor Daniel Vukobratovich has brought his broad expertise in materials, opto-mechanical design, analysis of optical instruments, large mirrors, and structures to bear throughout the book; Jan Nijenhuis has contributed a comprehensive new chapter on kinematics and applications of flexures; and several other experts in special aspects of opto-mechanics have contributed portions of other chapters. An expanded feature―a total of 110 worked-out design examples―has been added to several chapters to show how the theory, equations, and analytical methods can be applied by the reader. Finally, the extended text, new illustrations, new tables of data, and new references have warranted publication of this work in the form of two separate but closely entwined volumes.

The first volume, Design and Analysis of Opto-Mechanical Assemblies, addresses topics pertaining primarily to optics smaller than 50 cm aperture. It summarizes the opto-mechanical design process, considers pertinent environmental influences, lists and updates key parameters for materials, illustrates numerous ways for mounting individual and multiple lenses, shows typical ways to design and mount windows and similar components, details designs for many types of prisms and techniques for mounting them, suggests designs and mounting techniques for small mirrors, explains the benefits of kinematic design and uses of flexures, describes how to analyze various types of opto-mechanical interfaces, demonstrates how the strength of glass can be determined and how to estimate stress generated in optics, and explains how changing temperature affects opto-mechanical assemblies.

The second volume, Design and Analysis of Large Mirrors and Structures, concentrates on the design and mounting of significantly larger optics and their structures, including a new and important topic: detailed consideration of factors affecting large mirror performance. The book details how to design and fabricate very large single-substrate, segmented, and lightweight mirrors; describes mountings for large mirrors with their optical axes in vertical, horizontal, and variable orientations; indicates how metal and composite mirrors differ from ones made of glass; explains key design aspects of optical instrument structural design; and takes a look at an emerging technology―the evolution and applications of silicon and silicon carbide in mirrors and other types of components for optical applications.

Obsolete and irrelevant, a few useful sections
By Daniel T Brown
A more accurate title for the book would be: "Design examples from optical systems for US military and aerospace applications, approximately 1950 to 1990, well-illustrated." Given this more accurate title, the book will be of interest to a few specialists.

The core chapters of the book present examples of how various opto-mechanical design problems were solved in a variety of applications. Almost all the examples are taken from US military and aerospace designs, with a very few from industrial optics. The designs are well-illustrated with relevant drawings, with good reproduction. The book appears irrelevant to the design of modern industrial, commercial, and consumer optical systems.

The book is not prescriptive. For the various design challenges described there is little information about what approaches might be considered or what tradeoffs are relevant. The book is primarily a sequence of examples. Each chapter refers to other books and papers, but these references are not organized to be of use to further learning by the reader.

The core chapters of the book are:

Chapter 4: mounting individual lenses, 72 pages
Chapter 5: mounting multiple lenses, 72 pages
Chapter 6: mounting windows and filters, 30 pages
Chapter 7: designing and mounting prisms, 70 pages
Chapter 8: design and mounting small, nonmetallic mirrors, gratings, and pellicles, 48 pages
Chapters 9-13: large mirrors, 210 pages

Notice that the chapters on the design of large mirrors, primarily for astronomical and space-borne telescopes, are almost as long as the entire rest of the core chapters of the book on optical design.

The non-core chapters of the book discuss more general topics. These are for the most part astonishingly poorly written and edited. I am amazed that a well-regarded organization such as the SPIE and a well-regarded publisher such as Taylor and Francis would print a book containing text of this quality. As a randomly-selected example, consider chapter 2 (environmental influences), section 2.2.2 (pressure). The paragraphs, in sequence, have the topics:

1. Definition of pressure, including discussion of how the US customary unit of pressure measured in mm of mercury is derived.
2. Statement of the pressure range to consider for optical instrument design, primarily in the atmosphere, but also space and pressurized spaces.
3. Discussion of the atmosphere of the earth, approximate equation given for atmospheric pressure with distance units in US miles. Reference to graph of pressure vs. altitude (units in km), the range is for spacecraft design (to 10000 km). [Note: This mixing of units - even in a single paragraph - is common throughout the book. A discussion may use one set of units, a referenced equation a different set. Read the text very carefully before using any of the equations. Better yet, find a reliable book instead of this one.]
4. Statement of problems encountered due to incorrect sealing of optical systems, allowing contaminants to enter during altitude changes.
5. Statement of problems encountered due to pressures within optical systems caused by failure to vent during altitude changes.
6. Statement of problems encountered due to outgassing at low pressures
7. Statement of overpressure problems due to high-speed movement through air or water. Discussion of thermal problems resulting from this motion, mention of materials and coatings to reduce thermal stresses. [Note: This mixing of topics - even in a single paragraph - is very common. The writing frequently appears to be a first draft, before any organization or editing. Essential material on one topic will be buried in the middle of a paragraph on a completely different topic. Also notice the lack of prescriptive information - the text mentions coatings to reduce thermal problems, without any additional information.]
8. Additional statement about pressure differential causing optical alignment errors due to mechanical deformation. This appears to be a continuation of the previous paragraph about high-speed movement, because the preceding paragraphs insisted the the optics must be vented, which would eliminate pressure differentials.
9. Mention that atmospheric pressure changes can change the index of refraction of air, changing the optical properties. [Notice that this is a different issue, the previous paragraphs have discussed mechanical, rather than optical, issues. Also notice that no equation is given for the index of refraction of air as a function of pressure.]

As you can see, this one section discusses venting, pressure differences due to altitude, pressure differences due to speed, thermal problems due to speed, and optical problems due to pressure differences and due to index of refraction changes. Only a few statements are useful for design, these are statements about venting optics, and the equation regarding pressure differences due to altitude (with the altitude measured in miles!)

The core chapters themselves have their own oddities. For example, chapter 4 regarding mounting of individual lenses (one of the chapters I found useful) seems to be written assuming that the reader will obtain standard lenses, then grind the edges for mounting. Section 4.2 (considerations of centered optics) is mostly about how to mount optics in grinding equipment in order to obtain properly-aligned edges.

While I found some individual sections of the book to be interesting and useful, all in all, I found the book to be a waste of money. The diagrams are very good, and make the text easy to understand. However, the vast majority of the text is useless. It is interesting to read about examples of some optical systems, but this does not help to design optics. The concentration on US military and aerospace optics of the mid-to-late 20th century is potentially of historical interest, but hardly of practical use. The lack of design information, poor organization, and unfocused writing, all make the book hard to use as a reference. The very poor presentation of equations and rather random collection of units in those equations make me distrust the little design information that is present.

In 20 years of teaching physics, my students have never had a textbook that supports their classroom experience. Instead of using a textbook for supplementary problems or as a paperweight, my students now read their textbook and answer questions related to their reading.

Pro's of the Book -

-The first 10 chapters are strictly 1-dimensional, no trigonometry is needed
-Following an introduction to kinematics (position, velocity, acceleration in 1-dimension), Mazur introduces Momentum as a foundational topic
-Conservation principles are moved to the front of the book (Momentum, then Energy)
-Explanations of System Identification (isolated/non-isolated) occur early in the textbook
-Mazur differentiates clearly between Conservation principles & the meaning of "constant"
-Two textbooks, one for reading and the other for problems. It's no longer necessary to flip back and forth between pages in the text.
-Outstanding and numerous concept questions, including ranking tasks
-Supports a Modeling based classroom
-Useful in both a calculus based or a trig/algebra based class
-Appropriate for almost any level of physics (I'm using Mazur's text to teach at a public high school)
-Flexible order for topics (but, I highly recommend following his initial order, with Momentum/Energy/Conservation moved to the front of everything else!)
-Supports teaching E & M utilizing a field approach

Cons
-If you've never thought about how students learn physics and want to keep doing things the way you've always done them, then this textbook isn't for you.
-Students in trig/algebra physics courses might not like the little bit of calculus in the book, but it's easy to avoid due to the structure of the book.

I've used Halliday/Resnick/Walker for most of my career. I've evaluated Cutnell & Johnson, Serway, Knight, and every other popular textbook. Beyond using them to prop stuff up in the room or for supplementary problems, my students don't find the textbooks helpful. While some are better than others, none of them compare favorably with Mazur's book.

This is the first and only textbook I've ever found that supports the Modeling approach to teaching physics. In my first year using Mazur's book, my students have achieved higher gains than ever before on the standardized test instrument we use widely in physics. As a long time/expert modeler, I'm thrilled that my students will finally have a textbook that is both rigorous and helpful!

my students learned a lot of physics from this book
By Bill A
When I decided to teach college physics using interactive engagement, instead of traditional passive lectures, I needed a textbook that I could --- in good conscience --- really insist that my students read before each class meeting, to prepare them for each new topic. Each chapter of Eric Mazur's book reads like a one-on-one discussion with a skilled teacher, who introduces new ideas methodically, anticipates points of confusion, and pauses the student at key points with questions to probe his or her understanding. In response to reading Chapter 8, one of my students wrote, "I think the organization of this book is excellent: starting with conservation laws and then transitioning to forces helps you to understand better the concept of force." Another student wrote, "I found the topic of forces quite interesting because it really tested my physics intuition. In many examples where the author would 'surprise' you with the answer, I found myself actually being surprised at how my intuition misled me. It seems that dealing with forces will take more getting used to than I imagined!" The students send me terrific questions and comments after reading each chapter of Eric Mazur's book, which in turn help me to focus our classroom time on the topics they find most challenging. It is really a joy to use this textbook.

Getting the most out of each chapter deliberately requires the student to pause after each page or so to answer a "checkpoint" question that challenges his or her understanding of what he or she just read. This takes some effort and thinking --- that's a good thing. But it means that this book works best when reading the text is an integral part of the course work, rather than using the book only as a reference to be skimmed through the night before homework problems are due.

I love the placement of conservation laws before forces, as it takes time for students to build intuition about forces. I like having a whole chapter devoted to acceleration: after reading this chapter, not one of my students confused velocity with acceleration for a ball tossed straight upward (a common conceptual error). I think it works out quite well to cover as many of the physics ideas as possible in one dimension first (chapters 1-9) before adding (in chapter 10) the complication of vector decomposition, trigonometry, etc. This keeps the focus on the physics, not the math, in the early chapters. And this book's approach nicely complements the traditional ordering of topics that most students have already seen in their high-school mechanics course --- which challenges students who took high-school physics to consider Newton's laws from a new perspective.

Using this book means budgeting, in your students' workload, for time to read each chapter carefully. And it means going through the mechanics topics in an order that differs from Halliday/Resnick and its many clones. But I found (after having used this book twice in manuscript form) that the result was a solid conceptual understanding of mechanics, and consequently a better understanding of how to approach problem-solving.

Mazur's textbook - A refreshingly different approach!
By JBB
This textbook is quite unique and I am very happy to have used it for two semesters. Each chapter is divided into three sections. The first part is a non mathematical conceptual introduction to the topic. The complexity of the physics is thereby unveiled before the students gets confused by the math. This seems to work well. The math comes in from the second section and the last is a set of unique (and new) problems for the students to demonstrate their understanding.

What impressed me with this textbook (don't quote me!) is that although I have been teaching this course for years, I actually learned some new things while reading it. It is my plan to continue using it in the future. There are a few topics that need more coverage in the text but I have been assured that these gaps (just a few) will be corrected in the next edition.

The only other comment I should make is that I have only been using Volume II which covers E&M and Optics. I have only used one chapter from Volume I, so my comments should be read with this understanding.

Short: I like it!

Optimizing Strength Training:Designing Nonlinear Perioztn Wrkouts, by William J. Kraemer, Steven J. Fleck

The strength training strategy of linear periodization has long been recognized as an efficient system of resistance training. But—until now—no one had researched and explored the potential benefits of a nonlinear periodization training program.

Authors William Kraemer and Steven Fleck delve into nonlinear, or undulating, periodization to examine how it can result in long-term fitness and performance gains by adding more variety to workouts and optimizing each training session. In doing so, Dr. Kraemer and Dr. Fleck pioneer this newest periodization training technique and have become the leading proponents of this unique training method. Their innovative approach to strength training is shown to facilitate the training process and enhance performance, a fact Dr. Kraemer has demonstrated in several ongoing studies with basketball teams at the University of Connecticut.

Optimizing Strength Training: Designing Nonlinear Periodization Workouts explains how nonlinear periodization works and then demonstrates how to create nonlinear periodization training programs, including programs for special populations. Readers will learn that by creating different workouts for each day, they can emphasize exclusive training styles in every workout to maximize adaptation as well as ensure adequate recovery from the rigors of training. Fitness professionals and coaches will discover that this unique training style reduces the boredom encountered when using similar workout protocols for two to four weeks at a time and therefore lends itself to creating a more satisfied client base.

Using practical and user-friendly terms, the authors provide the knowledge required for understanding nonlinear periodization and training principles, selecting acute program variables, and discerning the practical considerations of nonlinear periodization before undertaking training. They also provide sample workouts using nonlinear periodization methods and discuss critical assessment techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of a program and determining training readiness. Fifty case studies at the end of the text serve as an exceptional feature for grasping a realistic approach of how nonlinear periodization meets physiological and scheduling demands while achieving optimal training goals.

No other book on the market teaches how to design, implement, and assess a nonlinear workout program. With knowledge gained through Optimizing Strength Training: Designing Nonlinear Periodization Workouts, professionals, coaches, fitness enthusiasts, and students will find themselves on the cutting edge of resistance training, able to employ this unique method of training that leads to superior performance.

"Dr. Kraemer and Dr. Fleck have once again put a brilliant system together that will benefit both the coach and athlete. The nonlinear system creates simultaneous gains in strength and power by placing the athlete in a position to succeed. It takes the art of coaching and lays a scientific foundation beneath it, thereby maximizing each training session. Athletes can train safely over the long term with dramatic results. We have used this system of training with our team."

Great book!
By Ferguson W. Roper
Fantastic introduction to flexible non-linear periodisation. Would be ideal for personal trainers although it did have a sports heavy focus. The case studies are good to have as well, although I think maybe there could have been more program examples for different outcomes.

Easy to read and understand.

The power of dynamic systems
By Gonzalo Romero Garcia
This is an interesting book with a different approach on strength training. Its authors are attempting to integrate the concept of dynamic systems to the one of periodization of strength. Somehow, all professionals of strength training know that nowadays the use of old patterns of periodization does not come about as many benefits in terms of strength improvement as a more varied approach does. This fact is still more evident in sports with a long in-season schedule. The utilization of a non-linear approach to training seeks to both improve the different domains where the strength is required and also to maintain the strength all along the season.

Although the authors highlight those aspects to take into consideration in order to plan a convenient strength program, they probably fail to 1)make the reader to understand why to chose this approach and what aspects of non-linear paradigm are connected with the strength training and 2)try to make a distinction between older paradigms bound to strength training in sport and the new approach.

Overall, it is a promising start toward what it would be the confirmation of a different perspective with respect to strength training

Where is Bompa?
By J. P. Ellison
I have (and continue to) follow periodization strength programs based on the work of such authors as Tudor Bompa, PhD. He (along with several others based in the old Eastern Bloc nations) coined the word "periodization" to describe the process of organizing your training year into periods, or "microcycles", that emphacize the four main aspects of muscular physiological adaptation (general anatomical adaptation, max strength, power, and muscular endurance). Following his principal of planning for peak performance, I have managed to win several national and three world championships in rowing over the years. I am convinced I would not have had the success I have had (while helping raise four kids and having a full time job) without proper planning. I have learned to train smarter, not harder... While these programs were designed to meet the needs of athletes to attain peak performance at specific times of the year, the principles can be applied successfully to the general fitness enthusiast, particularly if one follows the specific guidelines about the need to develop a firm foundation of fitness as detailed in Dr. Bompas' books Serious Strength Training. I read Dr's. Fleck and Kraemers book "Optimizing Strength Training: Designing Nonlinear Periodization Workouts" thinking I would expand on my knowledge base. To my sincere dissapointment, I found their book to be poorly organized and written. Every chapter is filled with pleas to see the differences in their plan (which basically follows the basics of periodization, without all the organization). The authors' main point, it would seem, is that coaches and trainers should pay attention to their athletes or clients level of readiness to participate in a planned workout, and to be ready to adjust or abandon the workout if they aren't ready to give close to 100% effort. They also over simplify the Theory of Periodization, and present their plan as a nonlinear alternative. They fail to give proper credit to those who created the Theory of Periodization, not even mentioning Bompa's name anywhere in the text, or the Bibliography (Bompa, on the other hand, does cite the authors in his). Someone interested in learning to design an intelligent training program would be better off reading any one of Dr. Bompa's books.
