4.5 stars - a fascinating story

Having just finished this, I must say that I'm sort of speechless. I'm not exactly sure what to say about this book. However, it's been a long time since I've felt the desire to stick with a story in one go and even longer since I've finished a book this long (82k+) in only a day.

With that said, there are a lot of warnings that should come with this book. For one, there is no romance in this one. In fact, I'd be hard pressed to even call it a gay novel because the main character is more asexual than anything. There are 'suggestions' and 'impressions' that this could turn into a gay romance but that could also be taken as the MCs just getting violent. But to those readers thinking they're picking up a young adult, new adult, whatever you want to call it, romance, you'll be sadly disappointed.

That out of the way, I'm extremely glad I read this. It might not be romance or m/m but I adored the characters and the journey I took with them. They're intense to say the least, psychotic and likely to fly off the handle bars but there was something about them that made me want to continue reading and find out where things were going. While I wouldn't say there's a huge cast of characters, there are more than the typical couple and a few side characters. The main contenders here are three guys: Neil, Andrew and Kevin. Neil is an asexual (kinda) who just wants to play Exy (which is like a sport that mixes lacrosse and ice hockey). He's a frightened kid but knows how crucial it is to lie low for fear of his father discovering where he is. Kevin is difficult to explain. He's mean and criticizes everything about Neil but at the same time, he's this lost soul who's been dealt just as crappy a hand as Neil has. Andrew is... psychotic. It's the only way to describe him. I don't understand how he became this way but he's got nothing to lose and he acts on that. He's five foot nothing but he's not afraid of staring down giants. He's amazing but scary and willing to keep everyone who he deems 'family' safe and right now that is Kevin.

The story follows Neil along as he gets accustomed to living in such an open place and playing the sport he loves. Immediately he has issues with Andrew and his gang (who are Neil's teammates) that makes his life difficult but he loves Exy enough to put up with the hostility from everyone. It's about the trials that Neil has to go through, the panic and fear he always has about being found out and being hunted again and the consequences he has to deal with when he makes his decisions regarding whether to stay or to run.

The only thing I didn't like about this book (aside from the lack of m/m romance, of course!) was how confused I was at times. The beginning will be hard to get through for some people because you're left wondering what is going on. You don't get the full back story for Neil or Kevin or even Andrew that really makes sense until well into the book so you're left wondering and probably saying WTF multiple times.

I feel that I should warn readers that this isn't exactly about the mafia either. While there's an undertone of it and even the threat of a yakuza pride descending on Neil and Kevin, it's not actually shown or very prominent in the story. Given that, I didn't much mind this because I felt like the whole book was focusing on second chances and Neil finally living a life, finding a home and standing up to his past. To do that, he needs Andrew and Andrew is willing to help him because of Kevin. It sort of seems like a love triangle but, like I said, this isn't romance. It is more of a bonding between these characters over a common issue.

To be honest, it's hard to explain this whole book because so much happens and is revealed that would spoiler the whole story if told. So, I'm going to leave it here. I enjoyed the novel. It has its issues but I found the whole thing fascinating and couldn't put the book down once I started. I liked that it wasn't saturated in sex but focused on such broken, and in Andrew's case, frightening characters. These characters are misfits, pure and simple and their attitudes and aggressions show that. It's a book of deceit, loyalty, dangerous situations and trust. It's not your traditional story but a gripping tale nonetheless and I'm really looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here and seriously how there's some m/m romance in the near future for Neil and Andrew!!

Seriously, if you want originality, flawed awesome characters, suspense... you have to read this one.

Initially, skeptical after lately reading writers who barely could sustain my attention. I was caught off guard on this one. Usually, an author starts out well and finishes poorly or somewhere in between. Nora Sakavic has the uncanny talent to not let up and keep you totally absorbed in her simple yet complex tale.

Now, this is the type of work that goes beyond just a yarn about love interests. It delves deeply into various characters, damaged lives, malignant forces and unanswered questions . There's a connection with her creations. For me , this is a sign of a great writer who enchants the reader. I believe this author is on the level of writers such as TJ Klune, Scott Sherman, C.S Pacat. Admittedly, the genre is different but the ability to thoroughly engage the reader is the key.

Look , this is just a good story. It does have a gay character and questions about our main protagonist's preferences. However, it's not the primary story line. Don't look for erotic interludes here. However, if you are really looking for an entertaining, absorbing, suspenseful work look no further. Really, I doubt you will regret reading this one. I'm on my way to the next book. BTW some things are great even though inexpensive.

Love this intricate story - rare five star review

As I write this review, I've just finished the first two books of the ALL FOR THE GAME trilogy - and they're both excellent. Main and sub-characters are extremely well developed, and continue to grow through the series.

This is a story about a varied group of young adults (college age) who had somewhat (to horrifically) broken childhoods. They're misfits who are brought together through a sport, while continuing to encounter setbacks. As the relationships between the characters evolve, we slowly learn more about their past and how it has brought them to where they are.

The first two books contain several gay characters, but no M/M romance and no erotica of any type.

The two initial books are full-sized novels; presumably the third will be as well:
The Foxhole Court - 4058 locations
The Raven King - 5035 locations

The final book in the trilogy, The King's Men, is expected to be released in January, 2014 (according to a blog post by the author on Nov 15, 2013). These are not standalone books - readers will want to read them all, in order.

I complain a lot about eBook prices; this may be the first time I've ever suggested a price.increase. I purchased book one for free, and book two for $0.99. This seems too low given the high quality of the writing and story. Perhaps maintain the free price for book one, but sell books 2 and 3 for $3.99 or $4.99. I would happily pay that amount in return for this author's fine work.

Well that was a surprise!

I was expecting a sweet, innocent first kiss.
That was H-O-T and I'm not talking about they July sun!
This was my first story by this author and wasn't sure what to expect but was in the mood for a quick short story and figured I'd give it a try.
Loved it. There's a note at the end the book that mentions the characters will reappear in some other works - can't wait to see where this all goes.

Good writing, good characters

I found this author through other authors that I know (for the life of me I can't remember which one.) I was in the mood for a short story and remembered hearing about this one so I went ahead an picked it up. I read this one the beginning of last month. (I'm unconscionably behind on my book reviews.) I read it in between commercials while watching Criminal Minds, I think.

It was just what I needed. Something quick to read but not just something short, something that also had substance and interested me. A relatable subject, too. First kisses. Something that everyone (at least everyone that I know) was at least somewhat nervous about.

I really enjoyed this short story. I liked the characters a lot. They seemed like great friends and I like seeing that type of relationship. The kisses themselves were pretty great, too. That first kiss... damn. That was one hell of a first kiss, let me just say that. In contrast, I loved that second kiss. How much more careful it was in comparison.

I enjoyed the writing, the story and the characters. After I finished the first thing that I did was look up Dina Littner on GoodReads. I'm anxiously awaiting when she will have a full length novel available. You can be sure that I'll be on the lookout and pick that up. Especially if it's about these characters because I really want to know how thing went for them after those kisses.

I recommend this if you want a quick read with good writing, heart, good characters and a little bit of heat. I give this one 4 quills and will be on the lookout for more from Dina Littner.

Sometimes a story doesn't have to be long to touch you...

Last night I came across a new author in my book group on Facebook. Her name is Dina Littner. She was offering anyone in the group a chance to read her new short story called "First Kisses." I thought why not, as the title alone seemed appealing and it interested me.

"First Kisses" is the charming and innocent story about three young friends who contemplate their first kiss. Jillian and her best friends, the brothers Caden and James. Caden volunteers to be Jillian's first kiss. I'm not going to tell you anything else. The story is just enough to make you think about your own first kiss. Sometimes a story doesn't have to be long to touch you.

I also think its meant as a "first" in other ways. The first story into the writing world as an author perhaps? I see so many possibilities with this short story. The three characters that she has introduced could be the back drop for so many romantic stories in the future.

Her debut novel is coming out in early 2016, It seems that the new novel will also be a series with at least three books already listed. "Through an Open Door" the first in the "Impossible Choices" series. Followed by book two: "Under an Open Window." And the third in the series, "On the Open Road a.k.a. Wheeler."

About the Author
Noel Amenc is professor of finance at the Edhec Business School, where he is in charge of the Risk and Asset Management research centre.  Noel is also associate editor of the Journal of Alternative Investments. He is the author of numerous publications in the domain of portfolio management, notably in the areas of asset allocation and performance measurement.  He also holds significant positions within the asset management industry, including head of research with Misys Asset Management Systems.

A very readable and comprehensive book

Here is a very readable and comprehensive book, produced by practitioner/academics Amenc and Le Sourd (Misys Asset Management Systems/Edhec). It is well suited as an MBA level investments course text, and the material is presented in a very accessible fashion for the practitioner. CFAs will especially appreciate this book as it references AIMR standards throughout (my rough count indicates more than 50 references to AIMR throughout the book, mainly in chapters 1, 2, 7 and 8). Francophiles may also especially appreciate the international flavor of many of the discussions.

Chapter 1, "The Portfolio Management Environment", defines portfolio management and describes how it works in practice. Asset classes, including alternative investments, are first introduced. The distinction between passive and active management is reviewed, and then the investment management process is described in terms of strategic asset allocation, tactical asset allocation and security selection. Performance analysis is then covered with a nice discussion of market efficiency and an excellent review of the performance persistence literature.

Chapter 2 focuses on performance analysis, and shows how to calculate both absolute and relative returns. Here, I found the introduction to the "Portfolio Opportunity Distributions" (POD) as developed by Surz to be fascinating, and along similar lines as the recent research by Kritzman and Page ("Asset Selection Versus Security Selection", 2003) which addresses one of the commonly misunderstood aspects of the Brinson et al 1986 and 1991 model, which decomposes historical performance and concludes that more than 90% of the variation in portfolio returns over time is related to asset allocation. As Kritzman and Page correctly note, "The Brinson et al studies and others like them present a joint test of investor behavior and capital market opportunities. They do not answer the question, which activity is more important: asset allocation or security selection, which is what we propose to do [by measuring the potential for dispersion]." In chapter 7 Amenc and Le Sourd also provide an interesting summary of one researcher's finding that 98% of subsequent writers on the topic have either misinterpreted or erroneously quoted the Brinson studies. The advantage of the POD approach is that it does not suffer from being a joint test of investor behavior and capital market opportunities, and as Amenc and Le Sourd describe, offers a plausible and useful way to potentially distinguish skill from luck in a manager's performance. Risk measurement is covered next, including introductory level discussions of VaR, extreme value theory and scenario analysis. The appendices to chapter 2 provide methods for calculating returns and descriptions of global market indices.

Chapter 3 covers pre-CAPM MPT (the Markowitz 1952 model), with nice discussions of the critical line method, Wolf's 1959 simplex method, Sharpe's 1963 single-index model, and the Elton, Gruber and Padburg 1977 simplified method that employs the Treynor ratio. A useful appendix presents Merton's 1972 Lagrangian resolution of the efficient frontier. Chapter 4 covers CAPM pretty thoroughly, though Treynor 1962 is inaccurately referred to as a 1961 paper (as most of the literature also erroneously reports), Fama's 1968 clarification is ignored, and while Amenc and Le Sourd discuss Lintner's first exposition from February 1965 in the Review of Economics and Statistics, they inexplicably ignore the best Lintner paper (in my opinion), Lintner's second paper of December 1965 in the Journal of Finance. A nice comparison of the Sharpe, Treynor and Jensen measures is provided here, and more recent concepts of tracking error, information ratio, Sortino ratio, M-squared, Morningstar's ranking system, VaR and style analysis are also discussed. A very nice section on the analysis of timing is provided, covering the models of Treynor-Mazuy 1966, Henrickson and Merton 1981, Henrickson 1984, and Grinblatt and Titman's 1989 decomposition of the Jensen measure.

I was surprised to find Roll's 1977 criticism of tests of the CAPM to be presented in this book as a criticism of the CAPM itself. I suspect that Amenc and Le Sourd were lulled by Roll's introductory remarks, which refer to his argument as a "broad indictment of one of the three fundamental paradigms of modern finance"; I would strongly urge that a careful reading of Roll indicates he is defending CAPM by critiquing the tests rather than the model - for example, on pp. 142-3 Roll 1977 examines the 1972 Black, Jensen and Scholes empirical analysis as follows: "Black, Jensen and Scholes rejected the Sharpe-Lintner theory...[however] ...we are entitled to be suspicious of their conclusion. Unless Black, Jensen and Scholes were successful in choosing [the true] market portfolio, their results are fully compatible with the Sharpe-Lintner model."

Chapter 5 examines performance measurement, first presenting ARCH, GARCH and ARMA models, and then presents conditional CAPM (including discussions of conditional beta and conditional alpha). Here again we find the Jensen measure, the Treynor and Mazuy model and the Henrickson and Merton model applied to performance measurement. Also valuable here is a nice presentation of non-market model dependent methods of performance analysis, including the Cornell 1979 measure and the Grinblatt and Titman 1989 and 1993 measures.

We find the APT model of Ross 1976 and Roll & Ross 1980 in Chapter 6. Fama-MacBeth's 1973 procedure is discussed, as well as the models of Fama and French 1993, Carhart 1997, and the BARRA model that eventually grew out of Rosenberg and McKibben 1973. Factor modeling is discussed, with overviews of maximum likelihood and principal components approaches presented. Next is a useful section on applying factor models to portfolio risk analysis, covering commercially available models from BARRA, Quantal and Advanced Portfolio Technology. I would like to have seen a discussion of the Northfield model as well. Sharpe's 1992 style analysis model is presented, as well as Roll's 1997 approach. An appendix derives the arbitrage valuation relationship.

Chapter 7 covers the portfolio construction process utilizing the approaches of Markowitz 1959, Treynor and Black 1973, Black and Litterman 1991 and 1992, Scherer 2002 as well as others. Amenc and Le Sourd is one of the few good descriptions of Fama's 1972 selectivity model, though they fail (as, I believe, have all else) to note the identity relationship of Fama's [Gross] Selectivity measure with Treynor and Black's 1973 Appraisal Premium metric. Perhaps had Amenc and Le Sourd presented their Figure 7.2, illustrating Fama's decomposition, to more closely reflect Fama's Figure 2 this identity would have been apparent to the authors. But Fama illustrated a case in which Net Selectivity is negative, whereas Amenc and Le Sourd illustrate a case in which Net Selectivity is positive, and they do not depict [Gross] Selectivity at all. Brinson's 1986 model is presented along with a nice discussion of the interaction term. Multiperiod and international aspects of performance attribution are covered well, and Engström's 2001 and Grinblatt & Titman's 1989 replicating portfolio techniques are also discussed briefly.

The text covers fixed income securities in the final chapter. Yield curve analysis, portfolio construction, and performance analysis for bond portfolios are covered, with introductory discussions of various fixed income models.

Amenc and Le Sourd include a bibliography at the end of each chapter, and I found this very useful. A colleague of mine bought the hardcopy, and after reviewing it I decided to purchase the e-book version, which I am enjoying very much. The authors have produced a well-researched and readable exposition that most practitioners would find to be a handy reference, and students would be well served with as a text.
