Great way to know St Ignatius

Easy to read but sometimes the notes are repetitive and distracting. Nonetheless, it's quite accessible and full of interesting factoids.

Easy read with additional commentary that enhances the text

Reading this book was far easier than I expected. I thought it might be rather boring and dry, but there are a couple of things that make it a good read if you are interested in learning more about the life of Ignatius:
1. Ignatius actually lived a pretty interesting life.
2. The comments added at the bottom help to put some of the historic events in context, as well as rounding out the narration.

If you have never heard of the Jesuits or Ignatius of Loyola then you might not find the book interesting. However if you are familiar with them, this book is a great way to understand how the Society got started and how Ignatius' spiritual exercises came to be.

Overwhelming in size and content - overused and heavily marked book

This was my first William Blake book. First and foremost, the book was almost falling apart as it was so used and marked and written on the margins all over by the person before me and also the paper seemed old. This book should not have been sold. I think the previous owner wanted to let it go and did not know how as he had, it seems, a strong relationship with this book over the years. I could not look in it as it was overwhelming. I donated it to the local library.

Also, I don't think this is a right book for someone who wants to be introduced to Blake and his poetry. That was another thing. But if the book was new, then I could have returned it. But it was not worth to spend more money to return it.

The Best Edition!

Mr. Keynes' edition of Blake's complete poetry and prose is the one I've used not only at Shimer College, but also in Russia and China when I taught Blake there. Mr. Keynes arranges Blake's writings chronologically. The reader can thus more clearly see how Blake's mythic system evolves. Clarity matters when a reader falls into a universe as visionary and fluid as William Blake's.
Each poem is a like a magical brick in the mystical structure Blake ultimately builds. His work begins in Innocence, a world where science, imagination, love, and wild beasts blithely dance in balance. When the cruelty, greed, and fears of Experience blight the peaceable kingdoms then society and the human soul split into warring factions.
Blake has been called apocalyptic. In his late great prophetic books families, lovers, societies, and the ecosystem fall to bits. But Los, Blake's heroic artist, "keeps the divine vision in times of trouble." Techno-science and institutionalized greed overshadow the earth, but Los keeps on building Golgonooza, the gorgeous city of art which ultimately connects heaven and earth. This can bring Jerusalem (the feminine divine)back into the heart of Albion (the universal humanity). When the feminine divine suffuses masculine power all things coalesce in a cosmic orgasm of art, science, pleasure, and prayer. "There is no body distinct from the soul!" Mr. Blake proclaimed in his Marriage of Heaven & Hell. "Everything that lives is Holy!" cries Oothoon, whose indestructible purity embraces the love that's "free as the mountain wind." She's become a role model for some exuberant Shimer students.
To truly partake of Blake please treat yourself to at least a few of the full-color illustrated editions that are now wonderfully affordable. The Dover editions are a bargain--but I order the Blake Trust (Princeton University Press) editions for my classes as well as Sir Geoffrey Keynes' lovingly edited Complete Writings. Buy this book! Q: What's your favorite baseball team?
A: St. Louis Cardinals. My father was a Cardinals fan, as was my grandfather. When I was a kid growing up in the rural south, everyone listened to the Cardinals on the radio. We seldom missed a game.

Q: What's your most memorable game--as player, coach, or fan?
A: I played a lot of baseball when I was a kid and teenager, but I do not recall making any spectacular plays. When I coached baseball, my teams usually lost. As a fan, Game 6 of the World Series last year, Cardinals vs. Rangers, comes to mind.

Q: Have you played or coached baseball? What position?
A: I was an average high school baseball player with big dreams. I tried to play in college, but got myself cut in the fall practices. I was an outfielder with a weak arm.

Q: Why are there seemingly more baseball books--both fiction and nonfiction--than other sports?
A: Baseball is a uniquely American sport, and it is the oldest organized sport in the country. It has a rich and colorful history, and up until the last generation, it was the most popular sport for kids to play. Sadly, that is changing.

Q: Who was the Joe Castle of your childhood--a player you revered? And was there a Warren Tracey?
A: I was never much of a Red Sox fan, but I adored Tony Conigliaro. He was a great player, and a certain Hall of Famer. The beanball that struck him in the eye ruined a great career.

Q: While researching Calico Joe, did you attend or watch games? Did you write any of the book at a stadium?
A: I only write in one place, and that's my office at home. I take a lot of notes when I travel around and research, which I did for Calico Joe.

Q: Did you employ any other behind-the-scenes techniques--watch old footage, interview players, read old issues of Sports Illustrated?
A: Yes, all of the above. I interviewed several former major league players. I read lots of old magazines, news articles, and books about baseball, and specifically, The Code. I found some footage of famous beanball wars of recent times.

Q: Do the beanball or the brushback have a place in today's baseball? Even Joe seemed to accept them as "part of the game."
A: Yes. There are times in baseball when a particular hitter must get hit. There are many reasons for this, but retaliation is always a factor. Problems arise though when the pitch is above the shoulders, and aimed at batter's head. If a pitcher does this intentionally, and they do it all the time, they are fooling around with a player's career. Throwing at a batter's head is never acceptable in baseball, even as retaliation.

Q: Have you ever been hit? Have you ever hit someone else?
A: Every baseball player gets hit. Fortunately, I was never beaned in the head. Our coaches never let me anywhere near the pitcher's mound, so I never hit a batter.

Q: Do you love baseball? If so, why? Any concerns that the sport and its stars (as Warren gripes in the book) have changed?
A: I still love baseball but it's not the game of my youth. The pro game today is dominated by money and, frankly, there is a lot of bad baseball being played. I find it frustrating, but I always get pumped at World Series time. College baseball is far more exciting.

Short But Satisfying

Calico Joe had every kid's baseball fantasy - lightening start in his big league debut, the lifting of a sad-sack team (the Cubs) to contender status, broken records, the adulation of his teammates and fans - and then he didn't. John Grisham has written a very good and captivating story - more than a baseball story, though America's game is the canvass upon which this tragedy is painted.

Warren Tracey was also a big leaguer - a pitcher - with the kind of stats that define most careers in the bigs: occasionally good, usually mediocre and sometimes awful. He was destined to never be remembered except by trivia hounds once his career reached its uncelebrated end - until his involvement in a baseball drama that ensured his name would be written in baseball lore, though not in any manner he would have desired.

The story is told through the eyes of Warren's eleven year old boy Paul and alternates between 1973, the year Calico Joe and Warren were in the game together, and thirty years later when all three characters are still living lives vastly influenced by the events of that year. Warren not only contributed to one of the game's great "what ifs," but also through his wretched performance as a father and husband, ensured that his family would bear the influence of being of and with Warren Tracey.

I won't go into more because detail would give away the drama to this slim book. Although not nearly as long as most Grisham novels, this story is worth the read. It is perfect for a single-evening immersion, so if you are the type of reader who likes to occasionally fully immerse yourself for a couple of hours with a good story and see it through to the end, this is your book. It reminded me somewhat of Grisham's book "The Testament" in that it touches on some of the same themes. It also is in the vein of "Bleachers" and "Painted House."

A good, though short, story that is engaging with a satisfying conclusion.

Wonderful story of fathers, sons, regrets, and forgiveness

This was really 4 1/2 stars for me. I love baseball and John Grisham's books, so I was not surprised at my response to this book.

Often, young athletes take plenty of sideline coaching from their Dads, and it is not always positive. Paul Tracey had it harder than most as his dad was Warren Tracey, a major league pitcher. When Warren was playing for the Mets, one play involving a rookie will ruin their carreers with one pitch; and not just any rookie, but one that was breaking records from his first at bat in the major leagues, Joe Castle aka Calico Joe.

that one play ruined both careers and this is the story of what happened when the spotlight dimmed. 30 years later, Paul Tracey attempts to re-unite the two players. Will both parties agree to meet? Will the truth be told after all these years? Will forgiveness be withheld or given? Will a father and son finally come to terms with their relationship?

To find out you will have to read this memorable story filled with wonderfully developed characters and love, hate, forgiveness, and redeemation.

It is not just a baseball story.

Classic Grisham: Gripping and Riveting Story

"What if a pitcher intentionally hit a batter, a young star? What if both careers were ruined? And what if they met years later to try to come to grips with what happened in a split second?" These are some of the opening words of John Grisham to the reader explaining his rationale for writing this book.

I must say, I began this book very conflicted. First off, I am not a big baseball fan, AT ALL! The sport has always bored me and I have had no interest in it whatsoever. However, John Grisham is one of my absolute favorite authors. So here was the dilemma I was in: My favorite author writing on one of my least favorite topics. How would it go?

After finishing the book, I was not conflicted at all! I absolutely loved the book. While the book definitely centers around baseball as the skeleton for its storyline, it moves in the same rapid and gripping style that one would expect from a Grisham book. Your emotions are stirred to love Joe Castle and hate Warren Tracey, but just when you think you have it all figured out, you begin to have just a little bit of compassion for Tracey and are conflicted in your emotions.

I think that Grisham found the perfect harmony between length and in-depth details in this work. There is enough baseball jargon to engage the avid fan, but not enough to turn away someone like myself.

Go buy the book and enjoy this short, but excellently written piece of American fiction. Grisham has hit one out of the park in this one (pun intended).

A dazzling anthology

One of the many strengths of this anthology is its diversity of voices, tones, and locales. On offer here is stark, realist fiction; a touch of fairy tale; the dark and the quirky; the melancholy and the comic; and the contemporary and the historic. Whether a reader is taken into the dark underbelly of a North Carolina town in Ron Rash’s “Burning Bright,” nineteenth century Angola in George Makana Clark’s “The Wreckers,” Sarajevo in Miha Mazzini’s “That Winter,” a seemingly fairytale-like metropolis in Stephanie Soileau’s “The Ranger Queen of Sulphur,” or Port Hebron, Michigan in Ben Stroud’s “The Traitor of Zion,” place becomes a character in itself.

The ambitious scope of the stories, as well as the anthology’s inclusion of international writers such as George Makana Clark and Miha Mazzini, make this story collection all the more diverse and powerful. The nexus between the personal and the political is explored in haunting fashion in Clark and Mazzini’s stories. In Clark’s “The Wreckers,” a story told through letters, we follow the narrator, Roland, on a journey on a slave ship up the east African coast as he pines for his lover, whom he has left behind in Cape Colony, South Africa. When Roland lands on shore, he is confronted with the horror of a Portuguese colonialist’s attempt to enslave natives.

In Mazzini’s “That Winter,” the narrator returns to his Bosnian village after yeas of serving a prison sentence for his crimes against humanity (in this case for overseeing the torture and execution of the Muslim villagers.) In the village, the narrator, who has been abandoned by his wife and children, is shunned by most of the inhabitants, and contemplates suicide. Mazzini presents the poignant challenge of whether reconciliation is possible in the wake of political turmoil and violence.

I highly recommend this anthology.

Watch out BASS and O. Henry!

This is my favorite short story anthology ever! Some of my favorite authors are included: Rick Bass, Lauren Groff, Robert Olen Butler, and Ron Rash. All of the 26 short stories are of the highest quality writing, some I have read before.

Every year I read the Best American Short Stories and Penn/O. Henry Prize Stories. "Astoria to Zion" may be even better than those collections, perhaps because A to Z is selected from a 10 year span of Ecotone magazine, whereas BASS and O. Henry is from just a one year span from all magazines. Some of the stories in A to Z were also in BASS and O. Henry.

Will look into subscribing to Ecotone!

About the Author
David Guymer is no stranger to the worlds of Warhammer, with exciting stories in Gotrek and Felix: The Anthology and the metaphorical pages of Hammer and Bolter magazine. He is a freelance writer and occasional scientist based in the East Riding, a place whose name alone conjures images of galloping lancers and rampaging hordes – although, to the region’s great loss, the only orcs tend to be imaginary. When not writing, David can be found exorcising his disappointment at the gaming table and preparing for the ascension of the children of the Horned Rat. Or the zombie apocalypse, if that happens first.

Enjoyable read

I don't have a lot of experience with Skaven, nor read a lot of Warhammer Fantasy books, but I found this interesting and engaging. I found that it played to queek's character well. I enjoyed the views from multiple characters, both those in reality and those in queeks head. I won't say more due to spoilers.

I did not find it difficult to follow, though I agree with below that occasionally, the skaven-speak could get a bit annoying, but it stayed in character and was full of fighting, blood, gore and lots and lots of skavenesque backstabbing. The most fun of the book was following all the different schemes, plots and betrayals.

In general, the book did a good job of keeping me wanting to know what happens next, and for a fantasy, joy read, what more do you really want?

Loved Headtaker

I loved Headtaker; I found the raw violence and chaos entwined with a twist of dark humour to be an excellent read.

As a long-distance admirer of the Horned Rat I found all the Skaven in the book to be both believable and charming. All (importantly!) complete with their own massive character flaws which simultaneously makes them endearing and truly nasty.

The Headtaker has been long overdue his time in the spotlight, and this book does both his battle prowess and `unique' character full credit! His `voices' and massive tactical `errors' make this book a great read, as you simply have no clue of what will emerge from the swirls of his madness.

I would recommend this book it to anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the Warhammer universe and want to get to know the twisted character in the Headtaker that is truly unique and interesting.

Most excellent and nuanced portrayal of the Skaven.

A delightful read for a fan of classic Warhammer. It portrays skaven of all stripes, from the dogmatic to the pragmatic to the utterly insane. The skaven characters on display here are much more varied and nuanced than in any other portrayal, easily equaling C.L. Werner's cast of Underfolk in his Time of Legends: Black Plague series. Each of the main characters, Rezzit, Ska, and the titular Queek, have their own unique perspectives on Skavendom and their own quirks (and neuroses) that motivate them. However, the gold star has to be handed to Sharpwit, whose unique perspective adds much-needed mental and emotional depth to the normally cartoonish race.

The dwarves in this tale don't get short shrift either. Their culture is presented much more thoroughly and colorfully than is typical in Warhammer. Even if they cleave to their stereotypes, they manage to resonate as unique characters with a range of motivations, struggling with obligations of honor, duty, and tradition pitted against pragmatism, desperation, grief, and outrage.

I'll really miss the Warhammer world of old, but it left at least a few great stories behind.
