I have a small Tax Prep/Tax Resolution firm. As my business has been growing, it has become more clear that my systems are not in place as they should be. This book is definitely worth the money. It gives a great outline of how a tax resolution service can be run very efficiently. Using the checklists provided, I am mapping out my entire work flow. I am tweaking the lists slightly to fit, but they are a great starting point. I am mainly working on the actual work processes now, but look forward to being able to get back to the marketing checklists. I feel once implemented, I should be able to increase workload significantly and still offer 5-star service to my clients. I will also create similar checklist to help with on-boarding new Tax Prep Clients!! Thanks Jassen for this brain dump of knowledge.

Great on pricing philosophy, not great on implementation

This book has the fierce arguments for a courageous pricing approach that one would expect from Dan Kennedy. However, I purchased the book hoping it would help me decide on pricing for an upcoming event. No go.

There is a story in the introduction about the Harrisons being about to price a new event at $2000 and Kennedy not only arguing with them but also putting money down on the claim that he (Kennedy) could make a go of it at $10,000 a head. It turns out that the event sold out at $4500. Yet all of us know people who have priced something high and had no one sign up.

Nowhere in the book is there any kind of checklist or discussion of how someone can reasonably well know, apart from being brave or chicken, whether or not the market will bear a certain price - or whether you can engineer it to do so. Nowhere is it discussed with sufficient clarity what else you have to have in place to be able to successfully charge premium prices.

All in all, this book will get you thinking about your pricing but it doesn't explain how to satisfy the wondering. Of course, you can test, but there is a huge opportunity cost (and cost in hard cash) if you test and fail.

The most exhaustive book on pricing with real world, non-academic concepts

[[VIDEOID:mo1FG8PXZ67H6Z4]]I was very impressed how detailed this book goes into pricing strategies. I was surprised how much psychology is in this book and how it affects buying decisions, and more importantly, profitability.

I first learned about 'business' in an academic environment by studying economics during my MBA program. Unfortunately many of the macro concepts taught in academia, do not always reflect the realities of buyers decisions in the real world at the micro level.

This book delves deep into how pricing affects your customers' perceptions and how discounting can increase sales in the short term, but may also decrease customer satisfaction, loyalty, and referrals in the long run. This is only one of many concepts in the book.

Price elasticity is a fascinating subject especially when explained with the interesting stories and examples in this book that will help you apply them to you and your business.

I recommend this to any business owner, or other marketing strategists to use with your clients. The amount of value in this book will be paid several times over with your business, or your clients' companies.

This book should make any business owner a lot of money, if he's the right kind of businessman

These two are pure American salesmen. Nobody does it better. There are four authors of the book and they tag team from chapter to chapter adding a different point of view, which makes the overall organization feel choppy. Kennedy and Marr are the main players here. Kennedy has written many books and the formula is evident. The book provides much valuable content, which you could get from a close read of Nagle. This is just a much easier way to learn it. (Although I have seen much of this content in other books, this book gives no end of book references to the work of others, except their acquaintances or their own work, which is done in context. Many of the references are very valuable sites.

The book also includes relentless driving of you to their own websites. This is one of Kennedy's tenets - get the buyer to pay you the privilege of buying more from you (and get it upfront) i.e. buying the book is an upfront fee prior to buying more! They hold with value-selling and value pricing but this is one of the weaker descriptors for that state. I prefer Davis for that.

Kennedy's description of niche and subculture markets is useful territory for salespeople to help better define the perfect customer.

Niche is an occupational/vocational attribute
Subculture is interest, belief, activity attribute.

Although much of the content is useful for B2B, the real client for this book is a small business person. Just as Nagle's work is really for the Fortune 500. Buy the book for your Kindle - it is a useful read, but this is not the "final " book on value/ premium pricing. It is a good "dose of salts" to most business people. Much of Kennedy's library is discounted on Amazon.

About the Author

Christian Mancas, PhD, is currently an associate professor with both the Mathematics and Computer Science Departments of Ovidius University, Constanta, Romania, and the Engineering Taught in Foreign Languages Department (Computer Science and Telecommunications in English stream) of Politehnica University, Bucharest, Romania (as an invited professor). Since 2012, he is also a database architect with Asentinel International srl, Bucharest, a subsidiary of Asentinel LLC, Memphis, Tennessee. His specialties include university teaching, R&D, business analysis, conceptual data and knowledge modeling and querying, client-server, hierarchical software architecture, object-oriented, event-driven design, structured development, complex project and small IT company management, Datalog, SQL, C#, XML programming, etc.

Professor Christian Mancas has published dozens of scientific papers (in Romania, USA, Austria, and Greece), which have been indexed by ACM Digital Library, Zentralblatt, Scopus, DBLP, Arnetminer, Researchr, TDGS, SCEAS, etc. He has also published three books in Romanian and dozens of reviews (mostly in USA, including ACM Reviews). He was a program committee member and session chairman for several software conferences in USA, Austria, and Romania, and he is a member of several associations (including ACM, the Romanian Mathematics Sciences Society, and the International Who’s Who of Professionals). Since 2006, his biography is included in Marquis Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Hubners’ Who’s Who in Romania.

Since 1990, he also worked for several IT startups, including his own DATASIS Consult srl (co-owned with his good friend and faculty colleague Ion Draghicescu) and DATASIS ProSoft srl (who had 25 programmers working for the design and development of several ERP-type database applications for customers from France, UK, Switzerland, USA, Israel, Greece, and Romania).

His main research areas are conceptual data and knowledge modeling and querying; database design, implementation, and optimization; as well as the architecture, design, development, fine-tuning, and maintenance of data and knowledge base management systems.

Dr. Mancas graduated in 1977 from the Computers Department of Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania, with a thesis on Generating Parsers for LR(k) Grammars, under the supervision of Professor Dan Luca Serbanati. Up until the fall of communism in 1990, he worked as a software engineer and, since 1980, R&D manager of a state-owned Computer Center in Bucharest (contributing to the design, development, and maintenance of a dedicated ERP), also conducting (from time to time) computer programming labs at Politehnica University of Bucharest, but for political reasons, he was not accepted for PhD studies. He started this program under the supervision of Professor Cristian Giumale in 1992 and obtained his PhD in 1997 from the above department, with a thesis on Conceptual Data and Knowledge Modeling.

The book is good, but the class is better!!

This good is very complex for somebody that, like me, doesn't have a economics background. The math is quite simple (I'm an engineer, so my math is very good), but you need a lot of concepts and definitions from economics that you only get in regular courses of microeconomics and econometrics.

If you are not an economists and have never taken an microeconomics course, start with Varian's microeconomics book...

Other than that, I'd really recommend you to take his course at UCI if you can... His classes are great, although he only teaches once every 3 or so years...

Comprehensive and updated, a must have for the serious practitioners

This is a college textbook any serious transportation planner, economist and engineer must have in its library. Comprehensive and up to date. As an example, the chapter on pricing includes not only the Singapore case, but also the latest implementations of congestion pricing, including London, Norway, and Stockholm, and also a discussion of the technologies used for practical implementation of road pricing.

Though the economic impact valuation of climate change is just briefly discussed, it caught my attention that as good economists the authors had the courage of being politically incorrect by saying openly that "...precise prediction of effects of carbon dioxide on climate is impossible" (see page 105), but don't get confused, they are not deniers, the subject is objectively discussed within the context of environmental externalities caused by automobiles in urban areas.

About the Author

In the mid 1980s the opportunity arose for Michael Palmer to work as a technician in the printing industry. Throughout the 1990s he wrote short sketches and one liners for a variety of shows on BBC radio and ITV, before concentrating on writing projects. Michael has had a lifelong interest in cars - Alvis, Bentley and Jaguar in addition to Morgan. Michael can be spotted regularly on the Kent roads at the wheel of his royal ivory 1997 Morgan 4/4.

You won't get much out of this one

I've never given one star, but this was the closest I have come in a long time.

After reading "Never Be Lied to Again" I was shocked to see people had rated it so high. I am a fifth year grad student studying psychology and law. While detecting deceit is not my primary area of research, I have read a decent amount of the literature. The information in this book seems to conflict with some of the most widely accepted findings in the research community. For example, Dr. Lieberman claims that when someone is lying they do not give details because "the event never happened." However, empirical research shows that people tend to give "too many" details, because they are trying to convince you. There are several discrepancies of this nature.

Dr. Lieberman says this book was a result of his own research. Out of curiosity, I entered his name in a PsycINFO word search. PsycINFO is a database of over 2000 psychological journals, most of them peer reviewed (and, therefore, accepted by others who study the topic). Dr. Lieberman's name did not produce any results. Books are troublesome in that regard. You can write anything you want and pass it off as fact. He also proudly displays those three all-important-letters behind his name, but he never says where he earned his Ph.D. I am not suggesting he got his degree on-line, but it would be nice if he added that information to the biography section.

To be fair, I am guess I'm not the target audience for this book. It's really more of a pop-culture book. The kind of thing advertised on the Today Show. But it troubles me that some of the information is wrong. Two good things about this book:

1. It is definitely a quick read that you could finish in a day or two. But that is because all the wasted space between chapters and sections. There are over 200 pages in the book but without the wasted space it would have been closer to about 125. Of course, nobody would buy it then.

2. I guess it would look good on your shelf, if you are into that kind of thing. As long as others haven't read it you could probably convince them that you learned a lot in the book and can tell when they are lying.

Ironically, one of the sections is entitled "A White Lab Coat Doesn't Make Anyone an Expert." Having a Ph.D. doesn't either. Bottom line, I am kicking myself for paying full price for this book. If you can get one for 5 or 6 bucks (or if money is no object), and you interested by the mixed reviews, why not give it a try? But don't get your hopes up. I personally won't be buying anymore of his books.

It only works for the "Guilty Liar"

The book is allright. It helps if the person who's lying to you feels guilty about it. Or perhaps if they are telling a white lie, and you want to get the truth. But, if the guy doesn't care that he's lying, this book won't help. It's all based on anxiety leaking through body language. Therefore, it also will identify a shy or self conscious person as a liar. Another problem: if the person is lying to himself AND you, it doesn't help either. Because the person REALLY BELIEVES what he is saying is true, even if it's not. This book identified an old girlfriend of mine as being sincere, even though she was lying, because she had fooled herself into believing what she was saying. Not altogether too useful for sorting through mixed / contradictory messages.

A Good Investment

This work has numerous techniques for any person to use in getting to the truth. Some of these techniques are obvious and others need further study. If you are expecting to read the book and immediately use the techniques effectively, you will be disappointed. As with most jackets on books, boastful promises and claims on this work are similar to the late night info commercials seen on cable TV. I have been studying NLP, nonverbal communication, and personality styles for 34 years and found the author's approach at times confusing and scattered. It takes practice and patience to learn these methods. There is no "5 minutes to the truth" in the real world. However, Dr. Lieberman does have numerous practical examples and scenarios to guide the reader in the life long process of understanding yourself and others. Read the book; it is a good investment!

Best Rumi collection ever!

I originally purchased this book simply to add to our Rumi collection. However, it has become an indispensable guide whenever one needs help or advice.

The great Shaikh Jalaluddin Rumi is rightly considered the most outstanding mystic poet of all time and one of the most popular and widely read poets today. Anyone who purchases this outstanding, beautifully illustrated book will see why. It contains most of Rumi's well known stories, all with excellent translations.

This is a book anyone needing guidance through the difficulties of life will greatly appreciate.

Wise tales for meditation

When I borrowed this book from the library, I knew I would have to have my own copy. The stories are beautiful, full of wisdom, and offer much food for thought. The illustrations are varied and lovely...beautiful Arabic and oriental selections by a variety of artists...Arabic calligraphy...i love this book so much!
